Ugandan Prosperity Pastor has been set on Fire by poor Locals: Pastor Joseph Kiwanuka of Agape Church

1Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. 3Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days (James 5:1-3).

24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation (Luke 6:24).

…the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:10)

My analysis

Pentecostal pastors in Uganda are largely silent about land injustice in Uganda????

The poor in Uganda are suffering in the hands of the rich who are evicting them from their land without compensation. The police has assisted the rich to harass the poor even if this is illegal. Recently in Nateete the President of Uganda publicly ordered for the arrest of the police chiefs of Nateete police station for participating in the eviction of the poor . These people who carry out evictions do it at night in most of the cases. They destroy the property of the poor who are helpless.

Although I condemn the killing of Pastor Joseph Kiwanuka in the strongest of terms, he was so blind to the signs of the time. The poor are very , very hungry because of the land injustice they have been subjected to. They do not trust the pastors any more because of the scandals in the born again Pentecostal movement. The rich are evicting the poor even without compensation because they want to build big commercial buildings, they want to start extensive commercial agricultural projects.

Land battle looms in Uganda

It is sad that even pastors are involved in this injustice against the poor. One of the big businesses on the lips of many people in Uganda is planting acres and acres of trees. Many people believe that when these trees mature after about 15 years, the owner will stink of money. Some prosperity pastors in Uganda are involved in this tree project. It is no wonder that Pentecostal pastors are silent about land injustice in Uganda.

Locals have rounded a pastor who had come to their village to evict them from their land beat him to death and after set his body ablaze.

This took place in Moome village, Kabulamuliro sub-county , Madudu , county , Mubende district. The pastor who was killed is Pastor Joseph Kiwanuka of Agape Church in Kitaka Zone, Nateete who was residing in Lungujja-Kitunzi .

For a while the locals have been complaining that this pastor had connived with a certain rich man to evict them from their land. One time Pastor Kiwanuka took surveyors to the village to survey the land but was intercepted by locals.

This time he had come with about 18 workers from a tree planting company called Green Gold with a plan to plant trees on the land of the locals. According to Emma Mugenza one of the workers, the pastors had made an agreement with workers to plant trees on 250 acres of land out of the 500. Mugenzi says that they refused to plant trees on the other 250 acres because they were being occupied by tenants.

He says that at first 10 locals came and told the pastor’s workers to vacate the place but they refused. After a while a mob of locals came armed with hoes, pangas, spears, and sticks. They were blowing whistles and drumming to mobilize the others. This forced the workers to take off.

They arrested the pastor and started beating him with sticks. The others fell on Mugenza and the other workers and started to beat them up. The pastor escaped and ran to the bush but the locals followed him there and killed him . The body of the pastor was taken near his vehicle; the mob got petrol from his vehicle and burned him up.

The Pastor’s vehicle which has government number plates UG 0126B was also set ablaze with petrol.

The workers ran to the bush for their life as the police also came to calm down the situation. The police rescued Steven Musinguzi whose hand and fingers were cut off and the other workers who were critically injured.

The CID Mubende Frank Muzoora said that Pastor Kiwanuka came to the police station to seek for protection while on the land but was referred to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC). However the pastor insisted and went to the land unprotected.

Muzoora said that 35 suspects have been arrested, while the remains of the Pastor have been taken to Kiganda in Mubende for burial .
