Nigerian politician, wife charged with attempted organ harvesting in London

 Ike Ekweremadu

Nigerian politician, wife charged with attempted organ harvesting in London

Nigerian rights activists are reacting with outrage after a Nigerian politician and his wife were charged by British prosecutors with human trafficking with the intent to harvest organs.

Ike Ekweremadu is alleged to have smuggled a Nigerian boy into Britain to harvest his kidney for their sick daughter. The former deputy senate president and his wife appeared before the Uxbridge Magistrate's court on Thursday, two days after they were arrested by London police.

Prosecutors accused them of luring 15-year-old David Nwamini Ukpo from Nigeria to the UK to donate his kidney to their daughter. Prosecutors also accused them of forging documents to make Ukpo appear to be 21 years old. It's not clear if Ukpo was aware of the reason he was traveling, but a letter written by Ekweremadu to the British High Commission in December stated they were going to the UK for organ donation.

Ekweremadu's daughter is reportedly battling a kidney disease. He and his wife were arrested on their way to Turkey to procure another organ after they allegedly were unable to continue the process with Ukpo. They denied the allegations on Thursday but did not enter a plea and were held without bail.

Prominent Nigerian human rights activists have denounced the politician on social media. The co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) Movement, Aisha Yesufu, tweeted, "How many missing people are related to organ harvesting? This is scary."

Another activist, Rinu Oduala, said, "They really thought they would get away with it in the UK. Because Nigeria is a place where criminals occupy public offices, commit crimes and go scot-free."

"That the former deputy senate president might be involved in organ trafficking is disappointing to say the very least," Oduala told VOA via a voice messaging app. "The Nigerian image, our reputation keeps dwindling out there. Every day our public officials make it harder for Nigerians to thrive out there, we're forced to prove a point that we're not that image of our country."

Ekweremadu's defense attorney, Gavin Irwin, described the allegations as "preposterous" Thursday. On Friday, supporters on social media pledged their support for Ekweremadu, including a colleague, senator Dino Melaye, who twitted, "I stand with Ike."

Ariyo-Dare Atoye, founder of the Nigeria Liberty Center, says it is too early to make conclusions.

"It is the aggregate of the records available to the UK embassy and the hospital that will be able to expose whether they followed due process," he said. "Has any document been forged? Has there been any manipulation? All of this will come to the fore possibly in the next adjourned date. This is not something that anybody can cover up."

The World Health Organization says one-tenth of all global organ transplants are performed using illegally acquired organs. Under the UK's Modern Slavery Act of 2015, conspiracy to harvest the organs of a child is a serious offense and perpetrators could face life imprisonment if found guilty.

Ekweremadu's next hearing is July 7.

Uganda shouldn’t be a dumping site for vaccines

Uganda shouldn’t be a dumping site for vaccines

Why would vaccines worth a whooping Shs17b be destroyed just because the consignment of the affected Sinopharm vaccines lacked temperature data loggers?

The importance of temperature loggers is to track the adherence to storage temperature standards, which is an important component for ensuring that the vaccine effectiveness is maintained.

But what is intriguing in this whole narrative is that Dr Medard Bitekyerezo, the chairperson of the National Drug Authority (NDA), said the Sinopharm consignment was brought into the country on March 1 without their knowledge. It was flown in by a Kenya Airways plane.

The vaccines, whose expiry date is August, had been donated to Uganda by the Mauritius government.

Dr Bitekyerezo’s lack of knowledge of  how this particular consignment of Covid-19 doses ended up in the country poses a lot of questions. Who exactly is in charge?

Surely, if such a crucial key government technocrat does not know who brought in the more than 150,000 doses of Covid vaccines, then who else would be in the know?

Such an incident explains the bigger picture of what is happening in our country. Events unfold without the knowledge of key technocrats but some powerful elements somewhere.

Despite the vaccines having been donated, a lot of taxpayers’ money has to be involved to have the same destroyed in Nakasongola. The same taxpayers’ money would have instead been used to cater for pressing needs, given the current tough economic times faced by many Ugandans.

Going forward, let this case be an eye opener for Uganda not to be a dumping ground for all sorts of donations.

Our  technocrats  need to take charge of their respective dockets. Besides costing us sums of money to destroy them, we are not even sure if the doses are still fit for human use.

The bad news of the intended destruction of such a huge vaccine consignment comes at a time when the country is also struggling to exhaust 44.7 million doses of vaccines that had largely been acquired through donations and direct government purchases.

Our call to concerned government authorities like the Resident District Commissioners, District Health Officers, is to ensure that they quickly mobilise citizens to embrace mass vaccination against Covid-19 so that all other vaccines in our custody don’t go to waste but serve their intended purchase purpose.  If this is done, it will lessen the burden on the taxpayers’ money.

Forced Covid-19 vaccination on children leaves parents in despair

Joshua Agaba, a 10-year-old pupil at Rwanja Parents Primary school in Mitooma District, was vaccinated with a Pfizer vaccine dose, which is not recommended for his age group and even without his parent’s consent.
His father, Mr Everest Nuwagaba from Mbarara city, told Daily Monitor yesterday that he became concerned when Agaba started experiencing adverse reactions after the vaccination in March at the school.

“They [school administrators] didn’t tell me about the vaccination. I quarrelled with them when I realised that my son was vaccinated and was experiencing unusual ear complications,” he said.
Mr Nuwagaba added: “They never informed any parent about the vaccination. Most of the children vaccinated were underage. My child is just 10 years. He has not been fine but they are keeping him in school [boarding section].”

We couldn’t independently verify whether ear complication was directly caused by the vaccine.
Mr Ray Ankunda, the head teacher, instead blamed the district health office.
“The district health team came to us and said they want to vaccinate children above 12 years. The time was too short to communicate to parents,” Mr Ankunda said.
“The vaccination was done last term. I had told children who are 12 years and above to come for vaccination, so maybe he [Agaba] didn’t get my instruction,” he added.
Health workers have been trained on who should be vaccinated with specific types of vaccines, according to the Ministry of Health.

Dr Sadic Byamugisha, the Mitooma health officer, denied the allegations, saying they are just planning to start the mass vaccination of children aged 12-17 years next week.
“I am not aware of that because we have just received the vaccines for children today. We are beginning the vaccination on June 21. We are still waiting for guidance from the Ministry of Health but we are still targeting those in the villages but we also want to do it in schools if the parents’ consent,” he told this newspaper.
However, Mr Nuwagaba  is not the only one who is complaining about the vaccination of children without the consent of parents, even as the Health ministry officials have repeatedly assured the public that no child has been or will be vaccinated without the consent of the parent or caretaker.

Mr Mathias Nsubuga, another parent,  told this newspaper yesterday in Kampala that his 14-year-old daughter, Recheal Namiiro, was vaccinated with Pfizer on November 29, 2021, at St Monica Birongo, a health facility in Kalungu District, without his consent.
“After that vaccination, she has been fainting and experiencing a lot of headaches. I went to Mengo hospital and they have recommended that we should do a CT scan on the brain. I have to do it to understand the harm,” he said, claiming that it was caused by the vaccine. He said her daughter’s learning has been disrupted.
According to the information on her vaccination card which this reporter saw, Namiiro got her first jab on the above date and second shot on January 3 at the health facility.
Namiiro told this reporter after returning from Mengo hospital that: “I started experiencing this after the vaccination. I am also feeling chest pain.” She is a student at Midland High School Mukono campus, according to her parents.
The medical form from Mengo Hospital indicates that Namiiro has “conversion disorder/hysteria and upper respiratory tract infection.”

Conversion disorder, according to scientists, is a neurological system disorder where a person experiences physical and sensory problems, such as paralysis, numbness, blindness, and deafness. The Mengo hospital doctor didn’t link the condition to the Pfizer vaccine.
A study about Pfizer vaccine side effects among recipients published last year by an American scientist, Dr Renuka Kadali, indicates that “musculoskeletal symptoms were in 428/803 (53.3percent); neurological symptoms, 102/803 (12.7 percent); head/ear/eyes/nose/throat symptoms, 97/803 (12.08 percent).”

The Director General of Health services, Dr Henry Mwebesa, had last year recommended vaccination of children 12-17 years who have underlying conditions such as sickle cell. Namiiro’s parents said their daughter doesn’t have any comorbidities. We  couldn’t independently verify it.
Mr Nsubuga said when he enquired from the ministry about the his daughter;s situation, they responded that: “It is the mandate of the ministry to make these decisions. Let’s believe first that no one wishes any Ugandan harm, and all these decisions are for the greater good.”

When these issues were presented to the national Covid-19 vaccination commander, Dr Daniel Kyabayinze, he said: “Stop the rumours. We don’t even have AstraZeneca in store.”
He said 317,000 children have been vaccinated against Covid-19, and that “some have comorbidities.”
Mr Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Health ministry spokesperson, said they are investigating issues of adverse reaction after the Covid-19 vaccination.
“We released the guidelines on which vaccine to administer for a particular age group. Any health worker that violates will be culpable. Our team is still investigating the issue of adverse reactions,” Mr Ainebyoona said.

Vaccines in stock

Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the Health minister, yesterday  said the country  has only Pfizer vaccine for children aged 12-17 years. “Vaccination of children 12-17 years will only be undertaken if parents accept their children to be vaccinated. We are still having discussions with the Ministry of Education, Local Government, and the parents in regard to this. If the parents want this done, it will be during the holiday season and parents will be requested to willingly take their children,” she said. “We don’t have vaccines for children 5-11 years. We shall only bring in the vaccines for these children [5-11 years] if the parents request that we bring them in,” she added.

Covid vaccination banned in schools

Under the new government directive, no child should be vaccinated while at school and no school should be turned into vaccination centre.

The head teachers in both public and private schools have also been warned against illegal Covid vaccination mandates.

Speaking to journalists in Kampala yesterday, the State Minister of Education, Dr Joyce Kaducu, reiterated the First Lady’s position that no child should be vaccinated without the consent of parents or guardians.

Even where the parent(s) consent, the minister maintained that children should be vaccinated from hospitals and other designated centres.

“For you to vaccinate the children, their parents, guardian or sponsors must consent. And this process means that we must not vaccinate at schools. That means you go with your daughter or son to a vaccination centre. You have to consent before vaccination is done, “Dr Kaducu said.

“This matter is being taken to Cabinet that will approve modalities of where do we want to vaccinate, whom do you want to vaccinate and who is to consent. Cabinet will approve and Ugandans will be informed, but for now, no vaccinations at schools are allowed. This is our position on this issue and it’s clear,” she added.

Responding to Dr Kaducu’s directive, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health , Dr Diana Atwine, yesterday reiterated that the vaccination will be conducted at health facilities and other designated  areas.

“We will not do Covid-19 vaccination from schools, we encourage parents to take their children to health facilities and any other vaccination centres,” she said.

Dr Atwine said vaccination of children against Covid would commence during second term holidays.

According to the Ministry of Education and Sports school calendar for this year,  second term holidays will run from August 13 to September 4.

The chairman of the National Private Educational Institutions Association, Mr Hasadu Kirabira, said the ideal would be for the Ministry of Health to vaccinate children from schools if they are  to capture a bigger number of learners.

Mr Kirabira said  vaccination is necessary because schools are  finding hard times to encourage learners especially in over populated schools to maintain some of the standard operating procures such as, maintaining social distance and wearing masks.

“I am of the view that it takes place within schools. The schools would consent parents and after invite Ministry of Health to vaccinate children who do not have other health complication to be able to capture a bigger number of learners if we are to fight Covid in schools. Vaccinating learners from villages may not yield expected results,” Mr Kirabira said.

SOPs observance

Citing resurgence of Covid-19 infections in the country, Dr Kaducu urged schools to reinforce implementation of Covid -19 standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of the virus in schools.

“Covid-19 threat is real. The Ministry of Health has registered new cases and schools should ensure that SOPs are observed,” she said. According to the ministry officials, the country now loses about two people to Covid-19 on a daily basis.

My analysis

You should not be fooled by Uganda’s seeming neutrality in the Congo conflict. Uganda is a client state of the USA and is part and parcel of the game of helping USA and her allies rape the mineral wealth of the DRC. Uganda and Rwanda are being used to fuel conflict and confusion in the DRC as American and Europeans Companies continue to rape the DRC of its resources. What the USA and her allies want is to make this look like an internal conflict in which the west has no part to play whatever.  Even the ICC works in the interest of the American New world order system and will fool you that it is trying to do something about the conflict. What the USA fears is peace in the Congo because this will mean that certain system of governance will come in place and will EXPOSE what is going on.

Congo MPs vow to halt operation against ADF

Lt Gen Muhoozi, the Commander of Land Forces, has been making statements on his Twitter handle supporting Tutsi, Lendu and Hema tribes that contribute the biggest percentage of M23 rebels.  He also vowed to fight anyone fighting Rwanda.
Lt Gen Muhoozi also heads Operation Shujaa, which is hunting down Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels that have been hiding in eastern DRC for more than two decades.

Responding to the debate in the DRC parliament, Lt Gen Muhoozi tweeted: “I hear someone in the DRC parliament said that ‘Muhoozi is an enemy of Congo’. Me? So an enemy of DRC is one who saves people in North Kivu and Ituri from being slaughtered by ADF in Le triangle de la mort?”

DR Congo president Felix Tshisekedi was by yesterday in a meeting with  the supreme council, the country’s strategic security organ in Kinshasa, discussing the situation in the eastern region.

The DR Congo accuses Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels. A few weeks ago, Rwanda and Uganda signed an agreement in which their armies will share intelligence, which has irritated DRC since it also shares intelligence in their eastern region.
The DRC legislators’ comments on Tuesday sparked demonstrations yesterday on the streets of Goma and other eastern towns in DRC.

Protesters burnt images and effigies of President Museveni and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame.
The demonstrators also burnt flags of both countries, demanding that they leave their country.
They also blocked the Rwanda-DRC border as they pelted stones at Rwanda police officers.
Some businesses suspected to be owned by the two nationalities were looted and vandalised in Goma .
Some of the Ugandan business people, especially in transport and merchandise trade were trapped in eastern DRC after M23 rebels captured Bunagana border town.

The DRC minister of information, Mr Patrick Muyaya, yesterday directed the media and locals to desist from hate speech and inflaming the situation.
“Fight against the spread of fake news, fight hate speech and stigma, the role and responsibility of the media during this Rwandan aggression,” Mr Muyaya tweeted yesterday.
The Ugandan Foreign Affairs ministry has not issued an advisory to Ugandans in the affected areas.
Efforts to get a comment from the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Gen Odongo Jeje, and Mr Okello Oryem were futile as they did not respond to our calls or messages by press time.
