Satanic Temple Sues City of Boston to Obtain ‘Equal Opportunity’ to ‘Invoke Satan’ at Council Meetings

BOSTON — The Satanic Temple (TST) has filed suit against the City of Boston to challenge its practice of allowing council members to choose those who present the invocation during public meetings rather than accepting requests from community members. The group’s legal challenge comes after it was denied requests to participate in 2016 and 2017.

“This case is not a challenge to legislative prayers, generally; and it is not a challenge to offensive prayers, particularly,” the complaint, filed on Sunday, states. “We take no issue with the fact that the City permits many congregations to invoke Jesus before council
meetings. We just want an equal opportunity — one guaranteed by the Constitution — to invoke Satan.”

It explains that the City allows its council members to select those who will pray during council meetings, but in doing so, most of the invocations presented are either Christian, Muslim or Jewish.

“As a result, the City broadcasts two constitutionally impermissible messages: those religions who make the cut are endorsed and are therefore insiders of the politically favored community; those who don’t make the cut are not endorsed and are therefore outsiders from the politically favored community,” the lawsuit states.

The Boston chapter of TST had requested in 2016 and 2017 to be able to present an invocation at an upcoming meeting but was told that it lacked sponsorship from a councilor.

In 2018, TST Co-Founder Malcom Jarry sent an email to then-Council President Andrea Campbell to demand inclusion but was again informed that speakers must be invited by a council member as there is no waiting list.

Jarry expressed objection, noting that the group had been denied participation at other events in cities and states across the country due to public outcry, mostly from Christians and Catholics. It says it lacks “political clout” to be invited.

TST therefore lodged a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD). While MCAD investigated the matter, it concluded that it could not be of assistance as the situation is not one of “public accommodation” since presenters must be invited by councilors. It also lacks the authority to address the constitutionality of the issue.

The Satanic Temple has therefore filed suit to obtain a court ruling in hopes that a judge would order their exclusion unconstitutional.

“The City refused to provide TST an invite because of the nature of TST’s beliefs: we extol the virtues of Satan, which is decidedly unpopular with the city’s sizeable (and politically powerful) Christian constituency,” the legal challenge states. “By refusing to invite TST, the City is sending a message that TST and its congregation are outsiders, not full members of the political community.”

“The Court should order Boston to provide TST equal access to offer the legislative prayer, should permanently enjoin Boston from refusing TST or any other religion an opportunity to offer the legislative prayer, and should order Boston to create a process for religions to sign up for the prayer opportunity,” it contends.

As previously reported, in 2016, when a member of The Satanic Temple in Pensacola, Florida walked up to the podium to present an invocation — while donning a black hooded robe — a number of attendees began reciting the Lord’s Prayer to drown him out.

In 2019, some officials and attendees walked out of the room while a TST member presented the invocation during the the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting in Alaska. Approximately two dozen also stood outside to protest.

“We want God’s blessings on America, not Satan’s curses,” one man who flew in from Pennsylvania told KSRM Radio, according to Fox News. “Lucifer is the eternal loser. Let’s keep him out.”

As previously reported, The Satanic Temple, which identifies itself as a “non-theistic religious organization,” doesn’t believe in Satan, but views the rebellious fallen angel as a metaphor.

“[W]e do not promote a belief in a personal Satan,” the FAQ section of the group’s main website explains. “To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions.”

The Satanic Temple also does not meet in an actual temple. Its national headquarters are located in the Salem Art Gallery in Massachusetts.

When the Lord Jesus Christ went missing in Silvester Beaman Innaguration Prayer : ‘In the Strong Name of Our Collective Faith’? Closing of Inauguration Benediction Refuted by Pastor

‘In the Strong Name of Our Collective Faith’? Closing of Inauguration Benediction Refuted by Pastor

WASHINGTON — “In the strong name of our collective faith, amen” was how Silvester Beaman of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Delaware ended his benediction on Wednesday during the Biden-Harris inauguration. His avoidance of using the name of Jesus in the prayer was noted by at least one pastor, who refuted Beaman’s choice of words online.

“Joe Biden is a man whose life experiences have taught him to seek the face of God,” Beaman told NBC News. “He’s had some dark times in his life. And he’s someone who is naturally a person of faith. He prays and listens to God.”

“We need a president who is after the heart of God,” he continued. “In these terrible times, if anybody can bring healing and reconciliation to a divided country, if we give him room to work, Joe Biden can be that person.”

On Wednesday, Beaman asked for God’s favor on Biden and Harris, controversial figures who were opposed by Christians in the election primarily because of their support for homosexuality, transgenderism and abortion “rights.”

“God, we gather under the beauty of your holiness and the holiness of your beauty. We seek Your face, Your smile, Your warm embrace,” he said. “We petition you once more in this celebration. We pray for divine favor upon our president, Joseph R. Biden, and our first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, and their family.”

“We further ask that you would extend the same favor upon our vice president, Kamala D. Harris, and our second gentleman, Doug Emhoff, and their family,” Beaman continued. “More than ever they and our nation need You.”

In keeping with the theme of unity, he spoke of realizing the common humanity, which compels one to have compassion for the sick, poor, elderly and oppressed. In brevity, Beaman also mentioned confessing sin and seeking forgiveness.

“In you, O God, we discover our humanity. And in our humanity, we discover our commonness, beyond the difference of color, creed, origin, political party, ideology, geography and personal preferences,” Beaman stated, remarking that men should “make friends of our enemies.”

He also touched on the nation’s stain of slavery, noting that slaves had been used to build the U.S. Capitol building.

“Let us all acknowledge from the indigenous Native American to those who recently received their citizenship, from the African American to those whose foreparents came from Europe and every corner of the globe, from the wealthy to those struggling to make it, for every human being — regardless of their choices, that this is our country,” he proclaimed.

“As such, teach us, O God, to live in it, love in it, be healed in it, and be reconciled to one another in it, lest we miss kingdom’s goal.”

Beaman then ended the prayer with, “To Your glory, majesty, dominion and power forever. Hallelujah. Glory, hallelujah,” the latter of which when literally translated means, “Praise Yahweh.”

But then he said, most likely to again incorporate the theme of unity, “In the strong name of our collective faith, amen.”

Riccardi

Riccardi shared his thoughts about the prayer on social media Wednesday evening.

“We do not petition the Father in the name of our faith. Our faith is worthless apart from the object in which it trusts,” Riccardi wrote. “To come before God in the name of our faith is to come before God in our own name, which is blasphemous, idolatrous, and hopeless for those who do not possess the infinite righteousness required for fellowship with God.”

He said that God accepts nothing less than coming to Him in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.

“Instead, those who would hope to receive anything from the Father must come to Him in the name of Christ His Son, for all the promises of God are yes in Him alone,” Riccardi outlined. “And coming before God in the name of Christ — who has accomplished the infinite righteousness required for fellowship with God — in union with Him we are heard for Christ’s sake.”

“Our prayers before the Father — the holiest of which are laced with enough sin to damn the entire human race for eternity — are thus sanctified in the sweet name of God’s dear Son, and received as a sweet smelling aroma of the sacrifice of His own precious blood,” he said.

“Solus Christus.”

1 Timothy 2:5 states, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 96:5 also teaches, “For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.”

The late Anglican preacher J.C. Ryle also once said, “Live a courageous life. Confess Christ before men. Whatever station you occupy, in that station confess Christ. Why should you be ashamed of Him? He was not ashamed of you on the cross.”

“He is ready to confess you now before His Father in Heaven. Why should you be ashamed of Him? Be bold. Be very bold. The good soldier is not ashamed of his uniform. The true believer ought never be ashamed of Christ.”

“Dr. Rachel Levine will bring the steady leadership and essential expertise we need to get people through this pandemic — no matter their zip code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability — and meet the public health needs of our country in this critical moment and beyond,” Biden said in an official statement released on Tuesday.

“[He] is a historic and deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration’s health efforts,” he said, likely referring to the fact that Levine will be the first “transgender” in American history nominated for a federal position.

As previously reported, Levine is a pediatrician who founded the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Eating Disorders at Penn State Children’s Hospital on the campus of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

A graduate of Harvard and Tulane University, he obtained fellowships in pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York before making the move to Pennsylvania to work at the Penn State College of Medicine.

“Levine … has long focused on the connection between mental and physical health,” NBC News reports.

“I have always been interested in patients with eating disorders because it really is this medical-behavioral health intersection,” he also told Lancaster Online, outlining that when he worked at Penn State he “would see patients and try to help teens and young adults and their families.”

Just four years after officially identifying as a woman, Levine became the physician general of Pennsylvania and was named acting secretary of health in July 2017 by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, an Episcopalian who was raised Methodist.

He was confirmed as secretary by the Pennsylvania Senate the following year without a single objection from Republicans or Democrats.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is that I was unanimously confirmed by the Senate,” Levine told NBC, stating that he met with most of the lawmakers personally. “[They] judged me strictly on my professional qualifications.”

Writing on the opioid crisis, medical marijuana, adolescent medicine, eating disorders and “LGBT medicine,” Levine is also a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. He was named the grand marshal of the Philadelphia Pride Parade in 2015 and is on the board of the homosexual and transgender advocacy group Equality Pennsylvania.

Levine drew controversy throughout the Commonwealth in 2020 as he provided regular updates on the COVID pandemic while donning feminine clothing, including last month, as a digital sign in a Waterford resident’s yard read for a time, “Don’t let a man in a dress rule us, Waterford!”

In June, Scott Township Commissioner Paul Abel resigned after allegedly being harassed at his private residence by those who were upset that he remarked during a Zoom meeting, “Well, I’ll tell ya, I am tired of listening to a guy dressed up like a woman.”

Levine, who says he struggled with his gender from his youth, played football and hockey for an all-male private school and went on to marry and have children. In his 40’s, he began seeing a therapist for his continued issues and officially identified himself as Rachel in 2011.

He and his wife divorced in 2013.

This past fall, under Levine’s leadership, the Pennsylvania Department of Health released guidelines on how residents could have “safer sex” during the coronavirus pandemic, including wearing masks as they engage in the sin of fornication — or sexting instead.

“You are your safest sex partner,” the guidelines state, as posted to the Department of Health website, which are prefaced with the recommendation that residents should “consider utilizing risk reduction strategies to protect your health and the health of your sex partner(s)” (plural in parenthesis in original).

“Your next safest partner is someone you live with,” the page continues, not using the word “spouse” but rather the generic “someone you live with,” perhaps referring to those who cohabitate before marriage. “Having close contact, including sex, with someone you live with who has a low risk of having COVID-19 infection helps prevent spreading COVID-19.”

However, “[i]f you do have sex with others outside of your household: Have as few partners as possible, and pick partners you trust,” the page reads, referring to those that the individual is obviously not married to. “Ask partners outside your home about COVID-19 status before you meet and engage in sex.”

The guidelines go on to advise that while large gatherings are unsafe during this time, “if you attend a large gathering where you might end up having sex,” the person should “[l]imit the number of partners” and “[t]ry to identify a consistent sex partner.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Health, under Levine’s leadership, also suggested finding alternate means to hook up with sex partners during the pandemic, such as via “[v]ideo dates, sexting, subscription-based fan platforms, or chat rooms.”

Kamala Harris, who attends a Baptist church in California, praised the selection of Levine in Tuesday’s press release, remarking in a statement, “Dr. Rachel Levine is a remarkable public servant with the knowledge and experience to help us contain this pandemic, and protect and improve the health and well-being of the American people.”

“President-elect Biden and I look forward to working with her to meet the unprecedented challenges facing Americans and rebuild our country in a way that lifts everyone up.”

Proverbs 29:2 states, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”

The late English pastor John Gill outlined in an exposition on the passage, “[B]ecause of the sad state of things, the number of good men is lessened, being cut off, or obliged to flee; wicked men and wickedness are encouraged and promoted.” Noncomformist minister Matthew Poole also outlined, “The people mourn, both for the oppressions and mischiefs which they feel and for the dreadful judgments of God which they justly fear.”
