The jiggers in Busoga are due to the immense poverty that has been created in Uganda by Museveni’s corrupt dictatorship. This dehumanizing  poverty has robbed God's people of their self esteem to an extent that they do not see any reason to mind about their bodies.

Now gospel musician Judith Babirye has claimed that jiggers in the region are a curse from God.
Speaking at gospel crusade organised by the Kamuli Pastors’ Fellowship last week, Ms Babirye said the jiggers are a punishment from God to the Basoga for shunning the gospel.
She said the only way out was to seek repentance for harassing God’s ministers who have in the past been sent to work in the region and to embrace Jesus Christ if blessings are to return.
 
“Basoga killed Bishop [James]Hannington in Mayuge District. You harassed and chased away Reinhart Bonnke from Jinja. This attracted a curse from God. That is why Busoga is home to jiggers,” she said.
The artiste confirmed to local media last year that she woulld contest for Buikwe District Woman MP seat in 2016.
The chief preacher at the crusade, Pastor Imelda Namutebi, of Liberty worship Centre, called on reawakening of the people to win God’s favour.
Pastor Namutebi encouraged spiritual and political leaders to mobilise the people to love one another and preach reconciliation and hard work.
