 In response to the unconscionable killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police, where a police officer joked about not doing drugs as Floyd desperately pleaded to breathe, Kassandra Frederique, Managing Director of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns for the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), issued the following statement:

“George Floyd should be alive today. Instead, he drew his last breath after one police officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes and another taunted ‘don’t do drugs, kids’ to the gathered crowd. With George Floyd most recently, Breonna Taylor earlier this month, and countless others before them, perceived drug possession and drug use served as a justification by law enforcement to dehumanize, strip dignity from, and ultimately kill people of color.

The drug war did not create institutional racism or disregard for Black life in the US. However, it feeds and bolsters the racist structures that snuff out Black life daily. This tragic case is no different. Officer Thao invoking drug use as a warning to bystanders and later as pretext for Mr. Floyd’s death is unconscionable, but the real cause of his death was his brutal mistreatment at the hands of police who repeatedly ignored not only his desperate pleas for mercy but also those of bystanders. The real danger we should be drawing awareness to is not drugs, but the ways in which the color of one’s skin, one’s perceived gender—as our trans siblings know all too well—or one’s socio-economic status make them a target for harassment and, far too often, death.

Drug involvement–whether perceived or real–has provided a convenient excuse for these violent and too often fatal law enforcement interactions. DPA will continue fighting to remove drug involvement as a cover for disregarding the dignity and sanctity of human life. And we will challenge and hold these institutions accountable.  We refuse to stand by while another person cries out, as Eric Garner and George Floyd did, “I can’t breathe,” as law enforcement ends their life.

Ending the failed war on drugs will not legalize Black people, but it will disrupt a system that chips away daily at the very core of our humanity. We don’t need symbolic gestures, we need to strategize, organize, and build campaigns to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We stand ready to work with our allies to do our part.”

As Minneapolis burns over the police killing of George Floyd and shock and disappointment in Africa grow, some US embassies on the continent have taken the unusual step of issuing critical statements, saying no one is above the law.

The statements came as the head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemned the “murder” of Floyd and said Friday the continental body rejects the “continuing discriminatory practices against black citizens of the USA.”


Africa has not seen the kind of protests over Floyd's killing that have erupted across the United States, but many Africans have expressed disgust and dismay, openly wondering when the US will ever get it right.

“WTF? `When the looting starts the shooting starts'?” tweeted political cartoonist Patrick Gathara in Kenya, which has its own troubles with police brutality.

He, like many, was aghast at the tweet by President Donald Trump, flagged by Twitter as violating rules against “glorifying violence,” that the president later said had been misconstrued.
Mindful of America's image on a continent where China's influence has grown and where many have felt a distinct lack of interest from the Trump administration in Africa, some US diplomats have tried to control the damage.

The ambassador to Congo, Mike Hammer, highlighted a tweet from a local media entrepreneur who addressed him saying, “Dear ambassador, your country is shameful. Proud America, which went through everything from segregation to the election of Barack Obama, still hasn't conquered the demons of racism. How many black people must be killed by white police officers before authorities react seriously?”

The ambassador's response, in French: “I am profoundly troubled by the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The Justice Department is conducting a full criminal investigation as a top priority. Security forces around the world should be held accountable. No one is above the law.”
Similar statements were tweeted by the US embassies in Kenya and Uganda, while the embassies in Tanzania and Kenya tweeted a joint statement from the Department of Justice office in Minnesota on the investigation.

"We are deeply troubled by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Authorities have fired the officers involved and are conducting a full investigation. Government officials should not operate with impunity in any country." tweeted the US Mission Uganda.

African officials also were publicly outspoken last month over racism in China, when Africans complained of being evicted and mistreated in the city of Guangzhou amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the time, the US was quick to join in, with the embassy in Beijing issuing a critical security alert titled “Discrimination against African-Americans in Guangzhou” and noting actions against people thought to be African or have African contacts.

Now the Africa-facing version of the state-run China Daily newspaper is tweeting footage from Minneapolis with the hashtags #GeorgeFloydWasMurdered and #BlackLivesMatter.

Apostle John Bunjo and his wife Sarah Bunjo of Christian restoration Ministries International have urged Ugandans to forgive gospel musician Judith Babirye, and “receive her back as a sister.”
In a joint statement released on Thursday through their official social media channels, the apostles challenged believers to respond to the scandal surrounding the Buikwe District Woman Member of Parliament as Jesus would.

The Apostles noted that God still has a lot that He expects from Judith: “We love you [no] matter what,” they said.

“I know for sure that Judith will come out of the mess and became a message to her audience. God is not done with Judith, he still has a lot He expects from her,” the statement read.

“I know many are going to throw stones at me, but one thing I want us to know is that Judith is a daughter of the kingdom despite her challenges. As Christians in Uganda and abroad, we know how Judith transformed the worship experience in our nation and abroad. There is no church in Uganda which doesn’t use Judith’s songs [during] worship services everyday. Let’s us forgive Judith and receive her back as a sister, What would Jesus do?,” the statement continued.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced purporting that Judith’s relationship with Hon Paul Musoke Ssebulime ended, with the latter returning to his former wife.

The union was deemed ‘controversial’ from the start with critics, including Ms Proscovia Nangobi, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) terming it as ”invalid.”
Babirye’s introduction ceremony, which also doubled as the wedding happened in July 2018 at the Country Lake Resort Hotel, Garuga, with a handful of Pastors present.

While blessing their engagement rings that time, Pr Imelda Namutebi of Liberty Worship Centre, Lugala, prayed that nothing will separate the musician and her spouse, who is the Member of Parliament for Buikwe North and a pilot by profession.

Pastor Michael Kyazze of Omega Healing Centre told the New Vision that time that legally and socially, Judith and Paul could get married but spiritually, “that marriage is questionable.”
“If you have three Children with a woman, you should have the powers to look after them and keep the mother. What makes Babirye think that the man will keep her for long? He used someone’s daughter and walked away,”  Pr Kyazze said then.

“I wish Babirye well but I hope the two learn lessons from their previous relationships since they both claim they have broken hearts,” he added.

Elsewhere, Dr Franklin Mondo Mugisha, lead Pastor at Empowerment Christian Prayer Center International, responded to this prevailing scandal on Thursday saying “the church must learn to support their own than to kill even the little they have.”

“You have blessed this Nation with beautiful songs. Your songs have changed peoples lives and they have made them love Jesus-Christ. You may have made mistakes as anyone else however your contribution in the gospel industry in Uganda is irreversible. We are not just praying for you, sister Judith Babirye we love you, Jesus loves you and you are not alone. I stand with you,” he said.

A video of a handcuffed black man dying while a Minneapolis officer knelt on his neck for more than five minutes sparked a fresh furor in the US over police treatment of African Americans Tuesday.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey fired four police officers following the death in custody of George Floyd on Monday as the suspect was pressed shirtless onto a Minneapolis street, one officer's knee on his neck.
"Your knee in my neck. I can't breathe... Mama. Mama," Floyd pleaded.
Bystanders filmed the scene as Floyd, thought to be in his 40s, slowly grew silent and motionless, unable to move even as the officers taunted him to "get up and get in the car."

He was taken to hospital where he was later declared dead.
Frey expressed outrage as calls rose for the officers to be prosecuted for murder.
"What I saw was wrong at every level," he said of the video.
"For five minutes, we watched as a white officer pressed his knee into the neck of a black man," Frey said.

"Being black in America should not be a death sentence."
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said he had been retained by Floyd's family.
Crump said in a statement that Floyd had been stopped by police over a forgery accusation, a charge often used for writing bad checks or using fake banknotes for purchases.
"This abusive, excessive and inhumane use of force cost the life of a man who was being detained by the police for questioning on a non-violent charge," he said.
Floyd's death recalled the 2014 choking death of New Yorker Eric Garner by police, who was being detained for illegally selling cigarettes.

'Pure evil'
His death helped spark the nationwide Black Lives Matter movement.
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said he had passed the case to the FBI for investigation, which could turn it into a federal rights violation case.
But there were mounting calls for the officers' arrest on homicide charges.
"This is pure evil," tweeted Nekima Levy Armstrong, an African American Minneapolis civil rights attorney.
