Prominent Ugandans who recently acquired honorary degrees from a
United States college are in panic following reports that the awarding
institution is nonexistent. The Tennessee Department of Education is
carrying out investigations into the activities of the United Graduate
College through its education commission.
Some of those who received the degrees from the college are successful businessmen and prominent personalities in Kampala. Many say they had never heard of the college and don’t know why they received their degrees.

didn’t know the purpose of the degree. I was just surprised that I had
been selected for the award, said former Kampala Mayor Jonhn Ssebaana
Kizito, who is one of those who were bestowed with a honorary doctorate
recently.
The college also offered doctorates to high
profile government officials in Kenya where it is alleged they were
asked to pay $3,000 or Shs6m for the academic honours.

Sewerage Corporation managing director Dr William Muhairwe was honoured
for his leadership and dedication to bring out the best in others, while
Mr Charles Mbire, the MTN (U) board chairman was honoured for his
selfless service to humanity and contribution to business development.
Mbire’s
mother, Ms Theresa Mbire, was also honoured for her outstanding
contribution to local women entrepreneurship and commitment to community
service.
Others honoured were Pastor Robert Kayanja and his wife Jessica. Kayanja was honoured for his determination of faith in God and contribution to the growth of the church’s worldwide; and his wife for pioneering women’s economic empowerment in self help projects. Mr Ssebaana Kizito, won honours for his excellent leadership and committed service to Kampala City residents.
Others honoured were Pastor Robert Kayanja and his wife Jessica. Kayanja was honoured for his determination of faith in God and contribution to the growth of the church’s worldwide; and his wife for pioneering women’s economic empowerment in self help projects. entrepreneurial acumen and excellent leadership, while Mr Tom Buruku was
recognised for his excellent service to the disadvantaged communities
within the country.
Makerere University vice chancellor, Prof Venansius Baryamureeba, says he was invited as the quest of honour during the graduation but does not know the criteria that was used to award the doctorates.

because I was invited as the guest of honour and since they were my
friends I decided to attend,” Baryamureeba told Education Guide.
According to the Daily Nation, the president of the United Graduate College and Seminary, Dr Dorothy Wisor, says she does not know how many students are enrolled in the university. She also admitted that they do not have a physical campus.

IT was an achievement worth celebrating. The United Graduate College
and Seminary on Sunday honoured nine Ugandans with honorary doctorates
for their outstanding service in various disciplines in the country.

IT was an achievement worth celebrating. The United Graduate College and Seminary on Sunday honoured nine Ugandans with honorary doctorates for their outstanding service in various disciplines in the country.
The college is a professional Bible college and graduate level institution which trains students for Christian service in different capacities such as pastors, educators, evangelists, missionaries and counsellors.
An honorary degree is an academic degree for which a university or other degree-awarding institution, has waived the usual requirements such as; matriculation, residence, study and the passing of examinations.
The ceremony, held in Miracle Centre Cathedral in Kampala, was conducted by the college’s chief chancellor Prof. Clyder Rivers, Chancellor Prof. Michal Pitzl, and special advisor, Prof. Bishop Arthur Kitonga. Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba was the guest of honour.

In his speech, Prof. Baryamureeba congratulated all the individuals and urged them to use the achievements to uplift others. The ceremony was also attended by a number of academic personalities, friends and family members of the new honorary doctors.
