Nine perish in New Year's stampede at Freedom City mall

territorial police is investigating an incident that led to the death of
nine people during a New Year's celebration stampede at Freedom City
Mall in Namasuba, a Kampala city suburb.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police
(KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire the incident happened at
midnight when the event's MC encouraged the revellers to go outside and
watch a fireworks display.
After the fireworks display, a stampede
ensued as revellers allegedly rushed back to jostle for seats resulting
in the instant deaths of five people and injuries to several others.

There was a
sombre mood at the City mortuary, Mulago National Referral hospital as
families received the bodies of the victims of the Freedom City mall
stampede.
Nine people, mostly juveniles died in
the stampede that preceded the New Year's fireworks display. By Sunday,
the death toll had risen to 10 after another person believed to be 17
years also died.
The revellers were attending a musical
show organized by popular Uganda Music promoter, Abbey Musinguzi, alias
Abtex. According to a doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity, the
deceased whose identity has not yet been established, died at a private
clinic near Freedom City mall, along Entebbe road where he was rushed.
In
an earlier statement, police described the incident as a ‘rush and
negligent' act. Police alleged that the master of ceremony of the night,
encouraged the revellers to go outside the mall to watch a fireworks
display. After the display ended, a stampede ensued, resulting in the
instant deaths of five people while scores sustained injuries.
Part
of the Freedom City mall has now been closed for further
investigations. Another event that was supposed to be held at the mall
was cancelled.

Traditional healer Sylvia Namutebi aka Mama Fina came out yesterday in a TV interview to reveal that events promoter Abitex has been courting her for the last 8 years.
However, the public only got to know about Abitex’s intentions of wooing Mama Fina a few months ago.
Mama Fina however revealed that she has always made it clear to Abitex she’s not interested.
“Abitex has been courting me for over 8 years and he has spent a lot of money on me. He bought me a plot of land in Bulenga measuring 28 decimals but I rejected it. My husband and I understand each other to the extent that I cannot leave him.” Mama Fina said.
The traditional healer also talked about her wishes in the next few years in this world. She said that these are to see her grandchildren grow up and prosper before she leaves the world.
The traditional healer also revealed how she got into her current trade.
She told the TV that it was her mother’s spirit which directed her to do what she’s currently doing.
Mama Fina explained that she saw her mother’s spirit in a dream which predicted her wealth.
This wealth was however intended to help others.
She further said that there is a powerful pastor she knows who always comes to her shrine.
However, when this pastor gets on the podium of his church, he starts blasting her and her deeds but she declined to say the names as she’s a very good keeper of people’s secrets.
