Restore term limits before the country celebrates its 50th independence: Uganda Activists stick to their guns on the restoration of term limits in Uganda


"The best gift we can give Uganda as we celebrate 50 years of independence is for Parliament to pass an amendment to the constitution to restore term limits," said Dr Zac Niringiye, the outgoing assistant bishop for Kampala diocese. "This is not a demand by religious leaders or politicians; it is a demand from the people that Uganda," Niringiye remarked at a launch of a joint collaboration between civil society and Parliament held at Hotel Africana Monday.

Political activists have launched a campaign for the restoration of presidential term limits in the constitution before the country celebrates its 50th independence.


They argued that restoring term limits would guarantee stable and peaceful transfer of power by Uganda's future leaders.


"The best gift we can give Uganda as we celebrate 50 years of independence is for Parliament to pass an amendment to the constitution to restore term limits," said Dr Zac Niringiye, the outgoing assistant bishop for Kampala diocese.


"This is not a demand by religious leaders or politicians; it is a demand from the people that Uganda," Niringiye remarked at a launch of a joint collaboration between civil society and Parliament held at Hotel Africana Monday.


Over 10 members of parliament who attended the event vowed to launch campaigns in their constituencies to get views of their electorate on term limits.


The initiative is organized by the Citizens Coalition for Electoral Democracy (CCEDU).


Kibanda County MP, Sam Otada, who is also a member of the Pan-African Parliament, urged Uganda to respect the African Charter on Elections and Governance, which prescribes term limits for African heads states.


Dokolo County M, Felix Okot Ogong said the restoration of term limits would ensure that leaders are held accountable and promote a vibrant opposition. He apologized for taking part in the removal of term limits saying the move was a mistake.


"I apologized to Ugandans for being part of the team that agitated for the removal of term limits. I want to repeat that I apologize for having been part of that project."
