Police in Lugazi have arrested two pastors of New Pool of Life Church suspected to have stolen a vehicle from one of the residents of the town.
The suspects identified as Eria Mwesigwa, a senior pastor of the church and his deputy Ronald Kakaire, both residents of Mbuya Village in Kampala. They were arrested at their church located at Najjembe Village in Buikwe District.
The chief investigative officer attached to Lugazi Police Station, Mr Henry Ayebare, said that Pastor Mwesigwa went to Lugazi Town and hired a vehicle Toyota Premio, Reg No: UAG 599A, from Mr Mugisha Wumalu but he never returned it.
Mr Wumalu reported the matter to Lugazi Police Station after taking long without hearing from Pastor Mwesigwa, which prompted a police investigation.
Mr Ayebare said with the help of the Rapid Response Unit, they managed to recover the vehicle at one of the garages in Nakawa where it was being re-sprayed with fresh paint. “We found out that Mwesigwa was trying to change the colour of the vehicle in order to sell it to one of the pastors in Jinja who was looking for a car to buy at the moment to help him in his pastoral work,” Mr Ayebare said. He said, at his arrest, Mr Mwesigwa was found with clothes which resemble police uniform which they suspect he has been using to terrorise residents in Mabira Forest where his church is located.
However, Pastor Mwesigwa denied all the allegations of stealing a vehicle and trying to change its colour saying that he had taken it for repair after it got a mechanical problem. Mr Ayebare said the duo and others still on the run will be taken to court after charges are preferred to them by police.
