More than 1,200 civilians have been killed in the restive DR Congo provinces of Ituri and North Kivu so far this year and millions of people now need humanitarian aid in the eastern region, the UN refugee agency said Friday.

 

Democratic Republic of Congo authorities declared a state of siege in May, an exceptional measure aimed at ending the reign of terror by armed groups operating in the region, most notably the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group linked to the so-called Islamic State.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its partners, recorded  "more than 1,200 civilian deaths and 1,100 rapes this year" in the two most affected provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, UN refugee agency spokesman Boris Cheshirkov told reporters in Geneva

"Attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) armed group have increased in brutality since late 2020, and the frequency of killings of civilians has not abated despite the state of siege," the UN refugee agency added.

Last weekend rebels shot or hacked to death at least 30 people in a new massacre in Ituri, UN sources said Monday.

Members of civil society blamed the killings on the ADF, considered the deadliest of scores of armed militias that roam the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo.

as "recorded 25,000 human rights abuses this year. In total, more than a million Congolese have been internally displaced in the east of the country in 2021," Cheshirkov said Friday.

The UN agency also highlighted the need for a steep increase in humanitarian funding for the area.

"Less than four months from the end of the year, we have received just 51 per cent of the US$205 million required in 2021 for the operation in DRC." 

According to the Kivu Security Tracker (KST), a respected US-based monitor of violence in the region, the ADF has killed 642 people in Ituri and North Kivu since January.

Congolese Nobel laureate Denis Mukwege on Friday called for an international criminal court for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), whose eastern provinces have been wracked by armed groups for a quarter of a century.

In a statement issued in the runup to the annual UN General Assembly in New York, Mukwege said impunity for brutal crimes was entrenched and local people lived "in fear and horror."

Despite the regional state of siege imposed in May, "the security situation in these provinces does not seem to be improving," said Mukwege, a gynaecologist based in the eastern DRC.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is alarmed by violence committed against civilians by armed groups in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that continues to cost lives and drive people from their homes.

UNHCR and its partners recorded more than 1,200 civilian deaths and 1,100 rapes this year in the two most affected provinces of North Kivu and Ituri. UNHCR has recorded 25,000 human rights abuses this year. In total, more than a million Congolese have been internally displaced in the east of the country in 2021.

Repeated displacement has put enormous pressure on those forced to flee and the host families that have taken in 94 per cent of DRC’s forcibly displaced population. Host families have shown huge generosity towards their compatriots but are exhausted and in need of support if they are to continue as first responders.

Harsh living conditions and a lack of food often trigger a premature return by displaced people to their place of origin, further exposing them to abuse and violence. Returnees account for 65 per cent of the serious human rights abuses recorded by UNHCR and partners.

Attacks attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) armed group have increased in brutality since late 2020, and the frequency of killings of civilians has not abated despite the state of siege declared in early May 2021 to counter the activities of these armed groups. On 3 September, armed men identified as members of the ADF raided a village in Irumu Territory, killed 15 civilians, set fire to 10 houses and kidnapped two women.  

On 6 September, an armed group reportedly raped 10 displaced women in Djugu Territory, Ituri province. UNHCR and partners took the women to the nearest hospital where they received psychosocial and medical support. 

Following the state of siege, North Kivu and Ituri Provinces are now led by military governments, under which the national army has ramped up its operations and military tribunals have replaced civil courts. Some armed groups, seeing their territory shrink, have surrendered. Others counter military operations with reprisals against villages and individuals they perceive as supporting the government. Despite government efforts to reduce the abuses of armed groups, our teams continue to hear horrific accounts of sexual violence, extortion, and looting.

UNHCR reiterates its call for urgent measures to protect civilians. We support local authorities and civil society groups who respond repeatedly to recurrent forced displacement, and continue to provide lifesaving aid, psychosocial and other support to people in need.

Funding for this humanitarian crisis remains critically low, with the result that UNHCR is only able to respond to a small fraction of the population in urgent need.

UNHCR is calling on the international community for more support. Less than four months from the end of the year, we have received just 51 per cent of the US$205 million required in 2021 for the operation in DRC.

Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige better known as BMK, a self-made homegrown tycoon who rose from grass to grace after he dropped out of school, has died.

BMK, known for his tenacity and hard work is believed to have died of cancer related complications from a Nairobi hospital after years of battling ill health. He was 67. 

A close family member, Eng Mubarak Ngobya told Daily Monitor that he on Friday ''spoke on phone to Mr Kibirige at around 5:30am before he (Mr Kibirige) was pronounced dead shortly after.''  

In his book, My Story of Building A Fortune in Africa, BMK explains how he toiled for years and built Hotel Africana with branches in Kampala, Moroto and Lusaka in Zambia with business interests in Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda. He also owned a chain of spare parts outlets in Uganda, Dubai, Japan and Zambia.

From a humble beginning, BMK, as he was fondly known, ran businesses built over decades transforming his conglomerate into one of the most respectable enterprises in the country. 

Born in 1953 to Ali Kibirige, a businessman and Mariam Kibirige, BMK was one of 36 children.
BMK’s acquaintances say, as an entrepreneur, he  believed in a version of success that largely depends on one’s ability to keep showing up, even in the face of adversity. He faced challenges but didn’t give up.

 

Part of his rise was also marked by business deals in Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates (UAE), China, and Japan sourcing commodities for his East African operations.

Earlier this year, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the king of Buganda Kingdom, awarded him for his distinguished service to the community. 

Buganda Kingdom in a brief message posted on Twitter described him as a true servant of the Kabaka and key supporter of Buganda Kingdom projects.

In the evening of his life, BMK also achieved what many prominent Ugandans have failed. He had his story documented and published a book which was launched on March.

A generous figure who supported the education of hundreds among other causes was also an influential pillar in Uganda Muslim community.  A mosque, Masjid Musa, at Hotel Africana embodies that. 

The father of 18 leaves behind two wives only identified as Sophia and Hawa.

Eng Ngobya Friday said ''the family was making arrangements to have the entrepreneur's body transported from Nairobi to his ancestral village in Nkoowe, Wakiso District in central Uganda.''

My analysis

In the video above, Pastor Wilson Bugembe argues that the view that Uganda Musicians go under water to meet Lucifer is a lie. He  argues like  carnally minded persons  that in order to prove that people go under water we need to prove using cameras. Can you Imagine a person who pretends to have a divine mission to fish  secular musicians from the sea to the kingdom of God does not know that musicians are into witchcraft and sorcery. The bible says the natural man(carnal mind) understands not the things of the spirit(1 Corinthians 2:14).

It is amazing that Pastor Bugembe is unaware that people have souls that can astral project into the water. Going under water does not necessarily mean that you go with your physical body. Sorcerers have the ability to get out of their bodies  and travel to different places under water or the marine kingdom. Erica Mukisa has exposed Jose Chameleon and his brother Weasel as Satanists who sold their souls to Lucifer for money and fame. Even one Uganda Musician has sang the song abayimbi balogo(musicians are witches). In this song, he mentions Bebe cool, Jose Chameleon, Raga Dee etc  as witches. None of those musicians has come out to challenge this musician.

Erica has exposed that  the late musician Mose Radio sold his soul to the devil  and was given a tough condition of not staying alive beyond 35. Mose died at 33 under very foolish circumstances. I have already warned Pastor Bugembe about associating with luciferian Music celebrities like Jose Chameleon because their master Lucifer hates Pastor Bugembe. What has happened to George Okudi and Judith Babirye should be a big lesson to  Pastor Wilson Bugembe.

Veteran rapper Bamboo and his newly-wedded Ugandan wife, Erica Mukisa, have released a book titled Erica Part One: Seven Years in Hell, which exposes the latter’s life as a ‘witch’ before she got saved.

In the book, Erica gives a detailed account of how she was initiated into sorcery by her paternal grandmother at the tender age eight years.

 

According to the book, for the next seven years Erica practiced witchcraft alongside her grandmother.

Eric finally met her salvation in February 2009 when she converted to a devout Christian.

TRUE STORY

Four years ago, she met her husband after the rapper similarly saw the light.

The lovely couple wedded about a fortnight ago in a low key lavish wedding in Ruiru with the groom’s father, Pastor Victor Mwangi, officiating the ceremony.

The two love birds are currently enjoying their honeymoon in the Caribbean.

Erica’s account in the book could easily pass for a script from a fiction movie, but she maintains that her story is based on true happenings.

About two years ago, Bamboo introduced Erica, then her girlfriend, to the public sharing their photo and a lengthy story on Facebook, of how she was delivered from sorcery.

However, the story didn’t sit well with netizens who slammed Bamboo for joking with God and creating fiction just to gain traction.

Bamboo, whose most famous hit is Compe, told Nairobi News that he quit music so as to prepare himself to become a pastor.

 

“I’ve been low key these days with music. This is because I’m preparing for full time ministry and would be transitioning into being a pastor with time,” Bamboo, who is the elder brother of sassy singer Victoria Kimani, said.

Two Ugandan opposition members of parliament were indicted on Tuesday for allegedly orchestrating a wave of machete killings that left dozens dead in the south of the country, a move described as "political persecution" by their lawyer.

 

For two months, the region of Masaka, located about 150 kilometers southwest of the capital, Kampala, has been living in terror of gangs that have killed around 30 people, mainly the elderly, in their homes at night, according to police.

After two days of questioning by the police, MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Sewanyana were indicted by a court in Masaka on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder, their lawyer, Elias Lukwago, told AFP.

"They have denied all charges. ... This is political persecution by the military regime of (Uganda President Yoweri) Museveni," Lukwago said.

"We condemn in the strongest terms the use of a biased judicial process to meet the political objectives of a ruling party," he added, indicating that they would be held in pretrial detention until September 15 in the high-security prison of Kitalya, near Kampala.

Ugandan police spokesman Fred Enanga explained that Ssegirinya and Sewanyana were arrested after statements by several suspects accusing them of organizing the attacks "to sow fear among the population and make people hate the government.”

Both MPs are members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) of opposition leader Bobi Wine, rival of President Museveni in the disputed January election.

Wine, whose real name Robert Kyagulanyi, said the accusations were mounted by the government of Museveni to discredit the opposition.

“When the president recently said that the opposition was behind the killings, we thought it was a bad joke. But when the police summoned our MPs, we realized that the regime's plan to involve the leaders of the NUP in the murders was at work,” he said.

In a speech last month, Museveni called the perpetrators "pigs" and vowed their doom.

In power since 1986, Museveni, 76, was reelected in January for a sixth term, ahead of Wine, who denounced an electoral "masquerade.”

"No matter what the Museveni regime does, one day Uganda will be free, and those accused of crimes because they belong to the opposition will be released," Wine said.

In Masaka, residents called on the government to take strong action to stop the killers.

"We mourn our loved ones who were killed, we live in fear of being killed by gangs armed with machetes," Sarah Kasujja, a 45-year-old trader, told Agence France-Presse. She said her 81-year-old grandfather is one of the gangs’ victims.

"Some elderly people who lived alone (...) fled their homes to find safety in the cities," she said. "The government should be held responsible for not defending us against the killers. The army and the police were deployed, but they arrived too late.”

Ugandan National Council for the Elderly President Charles Isabirye called the wave of killings a "shock to the nation.”

"That someone is killing elderly people who live quietly in their homes is inconceivable," he told AFP. "We call on the government to ensure the protection of the elderly in the countryside, and the people behind (the murders) must be identified and punished.”
