Hundreds of riot, regular and anti-terrorism police have on Monday  besieged the Kasangati home of Dr Kizza Besigye, leader of the country’s largest opposition party, who for the second week remains under lock-down with the police invoking a colonial era ‘preventative arrest’ ordinance to keep him indoors.

The heavy deployment follows a late-night clash between security personnel and Dr Besigye over a  tyre spike the FDC president insisted should not be placed in front of his gate.

A spike is a metallic device used to stop movement of wheeled vehicles by puncturing their tyres. Several spikes are placed on the road that leads to Dr Besigye’s Kasangati residence.

A senior FDC official, Maj Rubaramira Ruranga, told Daily Monitor, that the standoff ensued after members of Mr Besigye’s household removed a spike [tyre perforator] that had been positioned at the gate and placed it on the roadside.

However, security personnel insisted that on the spike remaining  infront of the gate.

According to Maj Rubaramira, the standoff ensued at around 11:00am and ended after 1:00 am.

“It was too late and the standoff could not be resolved deep in the night,”Maj Rubaramira added.

Authorities appear to be taking no chances after Dr Besigye twice last week slipped through a lesser cordon and suddenly emerged in town to take part in the ‘Walk to Freedom’ protests, drawing large crowds of supporters.

On both occasions, Dr Besigye was violently arrested, bundled into a police van where he was allegedly roughed up and detained at Kasangati and Kira Division Police posts till late without charge.

A particularly brutal police clampdown on the protests on Thursday last week left scores injured in Kampala’s central business district with some people sustaining gunshot wounds.

Police says it will not accept any public rally organized by any group across the country because they would interrupt the independence celebrations.

An-as-yet unexplained attempt by the police to break into Dr Besigye’s house last night was foiled by the opposition leader and supporters.

A press briefing is underway this morning in Kasangati and is expected to be addressed by Forum for Democratic Change party leaders who have all indicated support for their walk to freedom protests, a new campaign against President Museveni’s government.

Lukwago under preventive arrest

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is under preventive arrest at his home in Rubaga a Kampala suburb.

Police Monday morning blocked the Lukwago from leaving his home for work.

Lukwago was last week arrested twice and cautioned for disobeying lawful orders.

This after the Government banned opposition political gatherings as the country celebrates its Golden Jubilee.

Justice and constitutional affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire said: “The Police is stopping their gatherings to save the lives of Ugandans because their gatherings can be infiltrated by terrorists. Do they want us to have a repeat of the over 80 Ugandans who died at Lugogo and Kabalagala when we had terrorist attacks in 2010?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Police are still camped at FDC president Kizza Besigye’s home in Kasangati to prevent him from accessing the city.

KAMPALA
President Yoweri Museveni has challenged Ugandans to put their differences aside and instead love one another as this will benefit everyone.

Speaking at the national golden jubilee thanksgiving ceremony held at Kampala Serena hotel on Sunday, Mr Museveni in a rather very short speech reminded those in attendance that the greatest commandment is “Love the Lord your God with all you heart and also love your neighbors as your love yourself.”

“Today, it is very difficult to love... But make another attempt to love God with all your heart and also love your neighbors as you love yourself. It is very simple but very difficult. I wish you good luck,” Mr Museveni said before leaving to attend yet another official function.

The President’s remarks followed series of religious messages prophesying a better future for Uganda in the next fifty years of independence. Speakers, one after the other called upon people to renew their faith, live peaceful lives and also co-operate with the neighboring states for the realisation of faster growth.

“We are celebrating fifty years of independence and there is even a brighter future ahead of us. In the next fifty years, we will be much better. There should be peace and cooperation with our neighbors. Everyone matters and everyone is important. Let God lead our way to even better things,” Apostle Alex Mitala said.

The national golden jubilee thanksgiving prayers were held under the theme; Uganda God’s Nation. The event was attended by several members of the first family including the President and Hon Janet Kataaha Museveni, parliament of Uganda speaker and deputy speaker, deputy chief justice, ministers, members of parliament, and members of the public.

Release political prisoners - Archbishop Lwanga

http://www.newvision.co.ug/news/636097-release-political-prisoners---archbishop-lwanga.html

Date: Oct 08, 2012

By Juliet Lukwago

The Archbishop of Kampala diocese Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has asked government to unconditionally release all political prisoners as the country marks 50 years of independence.

In his homily at Rubaga Cathedral on Sunday Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga said releasing political prisoners would be a big step towards achieving genuine peace, reconciliation and justice.

He said some of the political prisoners had been arrested and imprisoned unfairly.

The cleric listed some of the challenges affecting the country such as abuse of power, human rights violation, education system, corruption, ignorance and the failure to distinguish the relationship between culture, religion and politics.

He also called on government to restrict land eviction and speed up the process of resolving land related disputes.

Despite the enactment of the land bill, people are still being evicted from their land, Lwanga said.

He added that even the Catholic church has not been spared from land grabbing by some people who encroached on its land.

“We live in a country full of contradictions; science and technology are making giant strides in all aspects of life, equipping humanity with all that it takes to make our planet a beautiful place for us all.

"Yet tragic situations of object poverty, disease and hunger are still killing thousands on a daily basis.

“Our destiny is still in our hands. All she is asking for is the space to breathe and thrive," said the Archbishop, before calling on Ugandans to forget the past mistakes

MP Tinkasimire's wife dies

Date: Oct 08, 2012

By Vision Reporter

The wife of Buyaga MP Barnabas Tinkasimire has died from severe burns after spending five days in an intensive care unit at Mulago Hospital, police says.

Agnes Ageno Tinkasimire, aged 40, breathed her last Sunday night at the national referral health facility where she had slipped into a coma since Tuesday last week.

Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba confirmed the death.

She sustained multiple injuries when unidentified assailants torched their house in Mukono early Tuesday morning.

The yet-to-be-identified attackers torched the house with its occupants – Ageno and a househelp – at around 3am, neighbours reported.

But the officer in charge of Bweyogerere Fire brigade station, Fred Sserwanga, said the incident happened at around 2am.

According to Sserwanga, the arsonists used petrol to light the fire.

Some of the neighbours suspected that the attackers had poured petrol around the house, tied a cotton cord around to convey the fire, and dipped one end in a jerrycan of petrol before lighting the cord.

They are also said to have placed sachets of pounded red pepper, to allegedly deter rescuers from breaking the door to save the family.

“By the time we came the fire had blown out of proportion and the flames were too high. We were coughing and our eyes itching as a result of the red pepper that was used,” says James Mugerwa, a neighbour.

The incident has since been tossed into a sea of controversy over who and what could have inspired it.

While some people say it could be a family affair, others are linking it to the recent role of the parliamentary committee on presidential affairs in the demolition of the city structures.

The committee days before the fire incident had ordered that all illegal structures in Kampala be demolished.

Legislator Tinkasimire heads that committee.

He is reported to have received death threats following that decision by the committee.

"I have not done anything beyond my jurisdiction.  I live in the city and by the law like any other Ugandan. But you choose to visit my house and burn it down when all my family is inside? Who does that?” he questioned.

In what seemed like an attack on his family, the legislator had also asked for protection from the police.

Tinkasimire also had said that the attackers also broke into his brother's house.

"So, I don't know which house or relative of mine they are targeting now. I am a young man and I don't want to lose my property just like that.”

Mysterious murders hit central

Date: Oct 07, 2012

By Vision Reporters

AS Uganda prepares to commemorate 50 years of Independence, some parts of the country have been hit by a wave of mysterious murders.

The murders, which occur at night, have plunged Ugandans in the Central region in fear and panic.

The most affected districts are Mukono, Masaka and Wakiso.

The assailants reportedly sedate their victims, before breaking part of the wall into their houses and brutally killing them.

Unfortunately, the Police seem to have ignored the incidents in favour of providing security in Kampala ahead of the jubilee celebrations.

Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, said she had not received any information from the team investigating the incidents.

Beata Chelimo, the Commandant of the Special Investigations Unit of the Police, declined to comment on the murders while the CID director, Grace Akullo, promised to get back to our reporters, but did not.

However, in Masaka, the mysterious murders have attracted the attention of the army commander, Gen. Aronda Nyakayirima.

New Vision learnt that Nyakirima met security officers in Masaka on Tuesday over the murders. After the meeting, he reportedly launched special investigations.

In one of the latest murder incidents in Masaka, a mother and her 14-year old son were beheaded in Kyesiga sub-county. The assailants are believed to have broken into the deceased’s house on Sunday night after burrowing a hole in the wall of the sitting room.

Family sources said after entering the house, they were seen by a little boy, Hakim Kato, who was grabbed and beheaded.

They added that after killing Kato, the assailants proceeded to his mother’s room and meted out the same treatment.

The two victims are part of the nine people in the district who have been murdered in the same way in a space of seven days.

Some of the victims were members of one family who included George William Senteza, his wife Rose Nakatte, and their children Joram Senoga, Emma Kigozi and Fiona Nalumansi.

The most affected areas in Masaka are Kyesiga and Kyanamukaka subcounties in Bukoto Central constituency, represented in Parliament by the Vice- President, Edward Ssekandi. Ssekandi reportedly attended the burial of the family that was killed on Tuesday.

Murders in Wakiso in Kakiri sub-sountry, Wakiso district, three people have been killed in a similar manner, within a month.

The mysterious murders have scared away residents and some of them have abandoned their homes.

New Vision learnt that others have started vigilante groups to protect residents.

However, there has been an increase in cases of mob justice in a bid to put an end to the silent killings.

“If you cannot identify yourself at night, you risk being lynched,” said one of the residents in Kakiri.

Sharon Nakyeyune, 21, Henry Mutebi, 23 and Livingstone Kalyango, 23, are the latest victims in the area. Unfortunately, no assailant has been arrested.

Early this year, two young men who owned a shop in Busabala in Wakiso were invaded at night by assailants who butchered them and took off with their money.

Similar cases in Mukono Two people were killed recently. Aida Nakiguli, 27, a resident of Butebe village in Mukono Central Division, was one of the victims.

The assailants attacked her at night and butchered her. Although Nakiguli had neighbours, they did not hear her scream during the attack.

The killer reportedly sprayed Chloroform in Nakiguli’s house before killing her. Her body was found the following day at midday, traced by blood which oozed through the door of her house.

One suspect, her former husband, was arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

A couple in Gulu Ward, Mukono Central Division was also killed in the same manner. The assailants broke into their house in the night and slaughtered them.

Police identified the deceased as Godfrey Ssekanyo and his girlfriend Irene Naggayi.

The body of Ssekanyo, who was a business man in St. Balikudembe market, was found by his colleague who had gone to pick him to go for work.

Ssekanyo’s body laid in cold blood next to his wife, who was in critical condition. She was rushed to a nearby hospital from where she succumbed to death from the deep wounds she sustained.

Four people were later arrested in connection with the murder. They have been charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison.

Kyambadde raps Musisi over Centenary Park demolition

Publish Date: Sep 27, 2012

By Vision Reporter

Trade and industry minister Amelia Kyambadde has attacked Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director for what she termed as inhumane and heavy handed manner in which city authority handles demolitions.

The minister Thursday morning stormed the centenary park grounds facing demolition amidst scenes of chaos as KCCA law enforcement officers with protection from police, led by Kampala Metropolitan district police commander James Ruhweza, were demolishing structures.

A visibly angry Kyambadde first confronted a bewildered Ruhweza and demanded to know why they were treating people like savages.

She said KCCA was responsible for the mess that has been going on at the park because they signed contracts with the developer.

In a stern voice, she said KCCA are only reaping what they sowed. She said she was shocked by the excessive force KCCA director Jennifer Musisi was using to evict tenants after she assured her that they had two months to relocate.

“Why can’t Musisi behave in a civilized manner? Which world is she?” she asked. “I have kept quiet for long about this but as the minister in charge of trade in this country, I will not tolerate this. These are human beings who should be treated with dignity,” an angry Kyambadde said as she was besieged by reporters.

“Why can’t these people respect Ugandans? From here am heading to KCCA to find out why Musisi her team are using a lot of force. Why can’t they negotiate?” the minister said.

Kyambadde said tenants there were victims of circumstances.

Pastor Male accuses police of shoddy work

Friday, 05 October 2012 00:47

Written by Siraje Lubwama

It seems the story of Pastor Robert Kayanja and the other four pastors, who were, on Wednesday, convicted to 100 hours of community service is not about to end.

Pastor Moses Male, one of the convicted pastors, has now turned his guns on the police, accusing them of failing to carry out thorough investigations. In his letter to the Inspector General of Police, Lt Gen Kale Kayihura, Male says the police have failed to look into the “endemic” kidnaps that have happened since accusations of sodomy against Pastor Kayanja emerged.

“I want to  draw your attention  to human kidnaps that now seem to have become endemic, carried out on Kayanja’s youthful followers some of who have testified against me  and my co-accused persons in the sodomy saga,” Male’s letter dated September 26 says in part.

Male, together with pastors Martin Sempa, Michael Kyazze and Robert Kayiira, was on Wednesday convicted of conspiracy to injure the reputation of Pastor Kayanja. On top of serving community service, they are supposed to pay a fine of Shs one million each.

However, Male maintains he is innocent claiming his conviction is premised on half-baked investigations. Citing the alleged kidnap of John Mutumba and Robinson Matovu, he says the two despite testifying against him recently produced recorded tapes retracting their court testimonies.

They are said to have been kidnapped on July 8, 2012 and the matter reported to police on May 10, 2012. According to Male, no investigations were carried out even when the suspected kidnappers are being held at Old Kampala Police Station.

Mutumba claims to have been kidnapped at night on his way from work at Miracle Centre where he works as a cameraman; Matovu alleges to have been called  and deceived that Mutumba had got an accident, then kidnapped on his way to get  to him.

Their captors were allegedly armed with machineguns and AK 47 assault rifles. Some few months earlier, there was another alleged kidnap of Kayanja’s aide, Ezekiel Wambuzi.

“Very surprising and disturbing is that since the kidnap video was recorded, posted on You Tube and statements made to Police on file GEF 198/2012, there seems to have been not even the least interest for police to investigate such glaring allegations,” Male wites.

Earlier abductions

Male also mentions Chris Muwonge who was allegedly kidnapped on his way from the Miracle Centre night prayer on the morning of April 18, 2009, and held for five days.

During his captivity, Muwonge was put at gunpoint and allegedly promised $120,000 to say on camera that Kayanja sodomized boys before his “kidnappers” dumped him at Kayanja’s Kawuku residence in Makindye division.

Next to be kidnapped was Herbert Tumukunde on the night of May, 11, 2009 by “four masked men” within the Miracle Cathedral premises, dragged into a waiting car, Toyota Mark II which immediately drove off, and was allegedly tortured. He was threatened with death.

Male notes: “More disturbing is that since the kidnap started way back in 2009, what the public has been told by police publicist Judith Nabakooba is that the police are seriously investigating.  I am not aware of any statements recorded from key suspects mentioned in respect of each kidnap.”

When Islamic fundamentalism STINKS: Gunmen target Christian students in Nigeria

Gunmen target Christian students in Nigeria

Gunmen have massacred at least 26 people in a student housing area in north-east Nigeria, calling victims out by name before killing them.

Residents of Mubi, in Adamawa state, say they heard gunfire for about two hours during the night.

Men reportedly moved from house to house, shooting people. Others had their throats slit.

Eyewitnesses say bodies were left in lines in front of the homes.

Police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim says the attackers knew their victims and called them out by name in an off-campus area near a polytechnic school where students live.

He put the death toll at 25, including 19 students from the polytechnic, three students from a health technology school, two security guards and a retired soldier.

"We strongly suspect an inside operation," he said.

Adamawa state, like much of the north, been targeted by Islamist insurgents.
Last month, the Nigerian military carried out an operation in Mubi and arrested dozens of people with suspected links to the Islamist militant group popularly known as Boko Haram.

Boko Haram, which usually targets politicians or security forces, has also attacked students in the past and has cells in Adamawa.

Some officials however suggest the massacre may have been linked to a recent student election.

There were suggestions of ethnic tensions between the mainly Muslim Hausas and predominately Christian Igbos involved in the vote.

Violence has erupted between student gangs in the past in Nigeria, but it is not known to have previously led to a massacre on such a scale.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency said reports indicated some of the victims were candidates in the polls.

"The crisis in Mubi is suspected to have been fuelled by campus politics after an election at the Federal Polytechnic," the agency's Yushau Shuaib said.

Mubi is not far from the city of Maiduguri in neighbouring Borno state, which is considered the base of the Islamist group that is blamed for killing more than 1,400 people in northern and central Nigeria since 2010.

The town has seen previous such violence, including in January, when gunmen opened fire on Christian Igbos at a house as they mourned the death of a friend killed in a shooting the night before.

Gunmen massacre Nigerian churchgoers

Gunmen stormed an evangelical church in central Nigeria, cut the electricity and opened fire once the building was plunged into darkness, killing 19 people, including the pastor, officials said.

Residents in the town of Okene in Kogi state, where the church was attacked late on Monday, reported fresh gun battles on a main commercial street on Tuesday, but the circumstances were not immediately clear.

Officials said it was too early to say who carried out the church raids, but the radical Islamist group Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted Christians during worship in a series of gun and suicide bomb attacks.

Kogi, south-west of the capital Abuja, has not been hit particularly hard by the Islamists, although members of the group are believed to have come from the ethnically diverse area.

In mid-July, a bomb went off near another church in Okene, but caused no casualties, while in April, the military said it had discovered a Boko Haram bomb making factory in Kogi, in the town of Ogaminana.

The Deeper Life Church in Okene was attacked by "unknown gunmen" at roughly 8:20 pm on Monday, said Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Olorunyomi, head of a military task force in Kogi.

Before firing on worshippers who had come for a regular Monday evening service, two of the three assailants knocked out the building's generator, state police spokesman Simon Ile said.

When troops arrived at the scene, they "saw 15 people dead, including the pastor," said Lt Col Olorunyomi, who added that four more people later died from their wounds. Several others were injured.

Mr Ile said were no early indications regarding the culprits.

"They entered the church...they just opened fire and they went away. We don't know their motives yet," he said.

Nigerian churches targeted in deadly attacks

A suicide bomber has blown his car up outside a church and gunmen opened fire on another service in Nigeria, killing three people and wounding dozens.

The assaults were the latest in a series targeting churches in Nigeria.

A purported spokesman for the Boko Haram Islamist group claimed responsibility for Sunday's attacks and threatened further violence.

"We are responsible for the suicide attack on a church in Jos and also another attack on another church in Biu," the spokesman, who called himself Abul Qaqa, said in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri.

"We launched these attacks to prove the Nigerian security wrong and to debunk their claim that we have been weakened by the military crackdown.

"The Nigerian state and Christians are our enemies and we will be launching attacks on the Nigerian state and its security apparatus, as well as churches, until we achieve our goal of establishing an Islamic state in place of the secular state."

The attacks took place at evangelical churches in the central city of Jos and the north-eastern town of Biu, both of which have been hit before by violence blamed on Boko Haram.

"The suicide bomber did not drive into the church before the explosion. He was in front of it," police spokesman Abuh Emmanuel said of the Jos attack.

"The church building collapsed entirely due to the intensity of the bombing."

Local government spokesman Pam Ayuba said two people plus the bomber died, and 41 were wounded.

A reporter at the scene said angry Christian youths had assaulted local Muslims after the bombing.

The second attack killed at least one person and wounded several when gunmen opened fire during a service in Biu, Samson Bukar, the local Christian Association of Nigeria chairman, said.

"One female worshipper was killed while several others were wounded, two of them critically. The gunmen escaped after the attack."

Boko Haram's insurgency has killed more than 1,000 people since mid-2009, especially in Nigeria's Muslim-dominated north.

JERUSALEM — The Holy Land rivalry between U.S. televangelism giants Trinity Broadcasting Network and Daystar Television is getting a little ugly.

As reported Monday, both broadcasters recently bought expensive new Jerusalem studios — located next-door to each other — as part of a competitive race to expand their footprint and programming in Israel. Both prime properties feature sweeping, unobstructed views of the Mount of Olives, Old City and Mt. Zion.

In the report, TBN accused Daystar officials of working behind the scenes to prevent TBN from obtaining its own channel on Israel’s leading satellite television provider Yes. Daystar, which already has its own channel on Yes, declined to comment on the allegations.

But on Tuesday it sent a not-so-subtle message to TBN, hanging a large “Daystar” sign off its balcony in a position where for the most part it can only be seen from TBN’s balcony 15 feet away.

The sign, which a Daystar crew member said may be permanent, will make it nearly impossible for TBN cameras to get a clear picture of Mt. Zion — without also capturing its rival's name and logo.

Parliament yesterday provoked condemnation from evangelists after legislators across the religious divide moved on a contentious matter of religion in a debate that sought, among others, to slap a ban on street preaching, which they say was inflaming religious hatred in the country.

The lawmakers made the call while debating Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebaggala’s statement on the inflammatory “Innocence of Muslims” video, which sparked off deadly protests across the Muslim world in recent weeks.

“There are people on the streets with Bibles they cannot even read. They are unemployed, and are looking for jobs because they want to survive,” Alex Ruhunda (Fort Portal Municipality) said. “We need to control these people before it’s too late. We cannot allow people who abuse other peoples’ religions; this will cause chaos in the country.”

While Parliament appeared united in pushing the government to ban disruptive street preachers, Prof. Simeon Kayiwa of Namirembe Christian Fellowship Church yesterday said any prohibition would be a direct infringement on the constitutional right which guarantees freedom of religion. “Open air preaching is an ancient Christian practice and shouldn’t be banned,” Prof. Kayiwa said.

In the statement, Mr Ssebaggala asked the government to condemn the anti-Islam crusaders and restrain those who are promoting religious hatred by inciting Muslims using cartoons, novels and films.

Presenting the statement on behalf of the Muslim Caucus in Parliament, he also asked government to grant Muslims permission to stage a peaceful demonstration against the video. But the deputy Prime Minister Moses Ali asked aggrieved Muslims to seek permission from Internal Affairs and asked Ugandans to notify police whenever they get people who insult other people’s religions.

Parliament did not take a decision on the matter but thanked Muslims in Uganda for keeping peaceful and asked the government to ensure that street preachers do not plunge the country into chaos.

Evolution of the roadside man of God

Posted by EMMA IKWAP

on  Sunday, August 26  2012 at  01:00

Street preachers are not a new sight on roads in major towns and especially on the streets of Kampala. However, over the years they have devised means to appeal more to their audience.

They are the noisy menaces who shout their voices hoarse straight into your ears as you wait for the lights to turn green along Kampala’s hot streets. They appeared out of nowhere a few years ago, like weeds sprouting in a garden. They did not seem like they were going to stay long…but stay long they did. Now they are a signature sight on the streets.

Though they are still here, Kampala’s street preachers have not remained the same. They have been changing, mutating in a way that seems to suggest they read the market (we the sinners) like a businessperson reads their clientele and then change accordingly, in their quest for souls.

It is these changes that one may argue have helped them retain a sense of relevance, and hence, be able to stand by the road and shout the gospel at you, year in year out, without losing the novelty.

The changes are small, almost negligible alterations, from basic things like the way they preach, to the way they dress and just the way they carry themselves around while at it. One of the very first changes is that street preachers have simply become too many, they are everywhere, at every traffic light, every roundabout and generally anywhere they are likely to run into people. They did not use to so many. Why? Because street preaching did not pay before. Now it is a job, with street preachers attached to certain churches, earning stipends for every sunshine-beaten-minute they spend screaming out the gospel.

Pastor Joseph Sserwadda, the presiding apostle at Born Again Faith in Uganda, says, “Those days, most of them went to the street to preach without receiving any form of support. So nowadays, we pay them not only to inspire them and to also help them since most of them have no job, but also to support them on transport.”

Pastor John Okiror, from Jesus Christ Ministries, Kabalagala, says, “They are supported by their respective churches, which facilitate them by either provision of transport and lunch, or pay them at the end of the months.” Some are provided with things like a bottle of water and sound devices, he adds.

However, he says, not all of them are given facilitation since some churches are not very well off.

In fact, Joshua Okodel, a preacher on Entebbe Road, says, he does preaching out of his own will and only depends of tips from listeners who hear his gospel.

Smart preacher

Preachers early on struck you with a disgustingly shabby look. They seemed to dress regardless of who cared to watch. Hanging shirts, stained clothes, unpolished old shoes, shoes without socks – the whole lot.

Fine, many of them still look shabby, but there is a remarkable improvement. A street preacher today can dress as sharply as a bank teller can. They strike you with that pointed black shinning pair of shoes, sharply protruding from a well-pressed pair of trousers, with a neat shirt and tie to boot – the makings of a corporate look.

So today, when a street preacher pauses by your car door for a few doses of scripture, he looks just like the client you are rushing to meet. And you are forced to listen. Patrick, a street preacher in Kikuubo, says, some of his colleagues sweated and became irritating to the public, but continued preaching. Most of them were broke, he adds, hence why they dressed they way they did.

Pulpits and sound devices

Street preachers never used sound devices like microphones and loud speakers. They walked around, back and forth on the concrete, with Bibles in arms as they preached. Now they have the luxury of leaning on a pole, and speaking into a microphone for the speaker to boost their voices even farther. In fact, many now even place a wooden pulpit by the roadside, place a Bible on its plate, and theN go ahead to preach as if they are doing it at a church service.

Some of the other changes are in simple acts like how the preacher reaches out to their audience. Chances are you have met a street preacher whose business seems to simply guilt-trip you for owning a car. “All those cars won’t save you on judgment day,” they say, as if it is their business that you own a car. Some, however, have moved to engage their audiences on more congenial front, say by telling them of just how deep God’s love is for them.

Some preachers, say along Namirembe Road, now carry young children along, and then proceed to make a tag team of preachers, with the adult speaking in Luganda, and the child translates into English. It can even get dramatic, when the adult preacher finds themselves having to correct the toddler on what to say. Street preaching keeps changing. Only God knows what trick they will next pull out of their bags.

Street preachers are not a new sight on roads in major towns and especially on the streets of Kampala. However, over the years they have devised means to appeal more to their audience.

The impossibility of defeating American prosperity pastors in Uganda using client state justice systems : Six Pastor Kayanja sodomy accusers convicted

Kato Mivule
It is wishful thinking for the Ugandan Govt to think that young boys in Uganda are never sexually abused. Rather than commission an independent investigation into these cases of sexual abuse, the Uganda Govt sought to Protect Pastor Kayanja (The Man of God) at all costs... Child Sexual abuse is nothing NEW. The USA Catholic Church, Irish Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Penn State University have been dealing with these issues. Therefore for the UG Govt to simply hide their head in the sand on this issue is absurd, and a cover-up at best... The point is that many young boys will continue to be sexually molested by the powerful and NONE of those cases will go reported because of fear and retribution from a Govt that protects the powerful, and that is what is at stake here. Pray for your young UG Boys!

Buganda Road Court has convicted four Kampala pastors, a businesswoman and a musician for conspiring to tarnish Pastor Kayanja’s reputation.

Pastor Kayanja, heads Lubaga Miracle Centre, in Kampala. His accusers claimed that he sodomised several youths at his church.

Pastors Solomon Male, Martin Ssempa, Michael Kyazze and Robert Kaira, together with Ms  Deborah Anita Kyomuhendo, a businesswoman and David Mukalazi, a musician, were convicted by Buganda Road Grade I magistrate, Julius Borore.

Mr Borore sentenced them to a fine of Shs1 million each and community service of 100 hours or serve six months in prison upon failure to pay the fine and performing community service.  Community service is where a convict is forced perform manual labour like digging, cleaning public facilities such as schools, collecting garbage among other chores.

The six are still being held in a holding cell at Buganda road court as they make up their minds. Meanhile Kayanja’s supporters are chanting outside court.

The magistrate said the case is sensitive in nature adding that genocides around the world have happened after the propagation of false information.
The case was first handled by Grade One magistrate John Patrick Wekesa and was later re-assigned to Julius Borore, after the former was accused of being bribed by Pastor Kayanja’s camp.

On August 8, Mr Borore denied the accused persons permission to pursue their appeal in the Court of Appeal. They had filed an application, challenging the decision of High Court judge, Lameck Mukasa, not to recall the 21 prosecution witnesses to sustain their case. Mr Borore ruled that the appeal was a delaying tactic to block delivery of justice.

Mr Kato Ssekabanja, who represented the convicts, said he has instructions from his clients to appeal.

In Summary
Umar Katerega claims that since the onset of the murder investigations, he has since lost clientele and is unemployed.

Kampala

Umar Katerega, the traditional healer who aided Godfrey Kato Kajubi in the murder of 12-year-old Joseph Kasirye, yesterday stormed CID headquarters in Kibuli along with his wife Mariam Nabukera, demanding payment for what they called, ‘their role that enabled the successful conviction of Kajubi’.

According to Katerega, who committed the murder, he is currently unemployed and has no hope of getting a job after what transpired during the investigations. “I was a key person in the conviction of Kajubi and so it is not easy for me to get a job. Police has to pay me for my role,” he said, although he did not disclose how much he wants the police to pay him.

He also evaded press interviews and kept demanding to see the director CIID, Ms Grace Akullo.

The demand comes four years after police began investigations into a case of child sacrifice, in which Katerega and his wife were hired by Kajubi at Shs15.36 million, out of which only Shs360,000 was paid to have Kasirye kidnapped and murdered.

Kajubi was convicted for the murder in July after Katerega acted as a State witness, earning him life imprisonment. In his ruling, Justice Mike Chibita said prosecution produced “enough evidence” to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Kajubi participated in the murder of the minor.

The ruling
The judge found that the two principal state witnesses, Katerega and Nabukeera, consistently mentioned knowing the accused very well and they both kept saying he did visit their house on the day Kasirye was killed.

The ruling was based on the same facts on which first trial judge Justice Moses Mukiibi based on and ruled in April, 2010 that the witnesses contradicted each other and that the evidence adduced in court was insufficient to convict the businessman.

The acquittal drew public fury, forcing the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal. The public has since called for the prosecution of Katerega and his wife.

Daystar, TBN ready for Messiah in Jerusalem:Oh really!!

Daystar, TBN ready for Messiah in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM — If the Messiah descends from the Mount of Olives as foretold in the Bible, America's two biggest Christian broadcasters are well-positioned to cover it live thanks to recent acquisitions of adjacent Jerusalem studios on a hill overlooking the Old City.

Texas-based Daystar Television Network already beams a 24-hour-a-day live webcam from its terrace. Not to be outdone, Costa Mesa-based Trinity Broadcasting Network last month bought the building next door.

The dueling studios are part of an aggressive push by U.S. evangelical broadcasters seeking to gain a stronger foothold in the holy city. Their presence not only offers boasting rights with American viewers and contributors, but also — and more controversially — a platform for spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to Jews in Israel.

In addition to its new multistory building, TBN is negotiating with Israel's Yes satellite television provider to secure a full-time home for its evangelical Shalom TV channel.

Daystar already airs its English-language programming in Israel with dedicated channels on both Yes and cable provider HOT Telecommunications Systems, claiming to be the first Christian evangelical broadcaster to transmit a gospel message to Israeli television sets 24 hours a day.

"The main thing we want to do is help sponsor what we call Messianic Jews, or Jews that have received Jesus Christ as their Messiah," said TBN co-founder Paul Crouch, who recently wrapped up a tour of Israel with 1,800 TBN supporters, most of them from America. "We want to do some Hebrew language programs to reach out to Jews and entice them to read the word of God and become what we call a completed Jew."
Such proselytizing angers Orthodox Jewish groups who say it threatens the character of a nation that was created as a home for Jewish refugees of the Holocaust. Christian proselytizing is legal in Israel, though the government has at times restricted and discouraged the practice; members of the Jewish faith do not seek to convert those of other faiths.

"One of the things I find offensive is that they are bragging about their missionary work," said Ellen Horowitz, research director at Jewish Israel, a grass-roots group created in 2008 to track and counteract Christian missionaries in Israel. "They're actually very in-your-face about it."

Horowitz said proselytizing is a touchy subject in Israel. "Our people have been through the wringer already with either persecution or assimilation," she said. "Now people finally get to a Jewish nation and someone pushes a copy of the New Testament in Hebrew at them. A sensitive line is being crossed."
When Daystar debuted in Israel in 2006, it created such a public uproar that the channel was temporarily suspended from the HOT network. It was restored after a court challenge.

Since then, Christian evangelical groups have quietly and steadily expanded their footprint in Jerusalem.
Last spring, evangelist organizer Mike Evans began soliciting donations from U.S. supporters for his $10-million purchase of a prime commercial building in Jerusalem's city center, where he plans to open a facility devoted to Christian evangelism.

In July, American missionary Rick Ridings, a nephew of Paul Crouch who operates a walk-in prayer center near Mt. Zion, hosted several hundred Israeli youths at a three-day gospel music and prayer festival in Tel Aviv.

Crouch said TBN, whose recently purchased building houses the Los Angeles Times Jerusalem bureau, is striving to promote Christianity in Israel, where the faith is sometimes overshadowed by the struggle between Judaism and Islam. Trinity Broadcasting already is one of the world's largest religious broadcasters, with 18 networks in seven languages.

"Christianity is not represented in Israel as well as it could," he said. "We hope to equalize that and give Christianity a better platform."

The latest inroads by evangelical Christians have not triggered the backlash that occurred in 2006 when Daystar went on the air. In fact, Crouch said TBN's biggest obstacle in Jerusalem so far is rival Daystar, which he said tried to block TBN's Shalom Channel from airing on Yes satellite.

"They raised a stink," Crouch said. "I guess some of our Christian brothers don't want the competition."
A Yes spokeswoman said negotiations with TBN are ongoing and a final deal has not been reached. Daystar officials declined to comment, but said in a statement that the company "loves and appreciates Israel."
Some Israelis are welcoming members of the American evangelical community as strategic partners, both politically and economically.

In addition to becoming the fastest-growing segment of Israel's tourism market, U.S. evangelicals tend to be staunchly pro-Israel, lobbying in Washington on the Israeli government's behalf on such matters as the Palestinian conflict or West Bank settlement construction.

Christian broadcasters have donated tens of millions of dollars in recent years to build Israeli schools, community centers, hospital wards and even synagogues. Part of the support is based upon their belief that the return of the Jewish people to Israel will usher in the second coming of Jesus.

Christian groups have forged close ties with Russian-born lawmakers in the parliament, or Knesset, and recently helped push through a law that extended property tax exemptions once available only to Jewish religious institutions to those owned by Christian congregations.

"They are much more sophisticated and calculated than they were before," Horowitz said. "With all the millions of dollars they are giving, it's harder for the government to say no."

Her group said the number of evangelical Christian congregations in Israel has grown to 150 with as many as 20,000 followers, up from an estimated 3,000 in 1987, based on estimates from the congregations.
Christian broadcasters boast to their viewers that they are seeing a record number of Jews convert to Christianity. "The harvest is coming in so fast," Crouch said.

Much of the growth is coming from the 1 million Russian immigrants who arrived in Israel during the 1990s. Many of the immigrants were never considered Jewish by Orthodox rabbis or had practiced Christianity in Russia.

"They see Russians as a way to get a foothold in Israel and create a Christian revival here," Horowitz said. "We don't have anything against Christians. But the Jewish people have to watch their backside to make sure this evangelical embrace does not become a hold that we can't get out of."

Preacher and televangelist Benny Hinn has said on a Trinity Broadcasting Network program that he believes when the Rev. Billy Graham dies, America will experience a major religious revival. (Source)

On the 19 July 2012 episode of Praise the Lord on TBN, guest Benny Hinn declared that "the sign" of revival would be the death of evangelist Billy Graham. As the men on stage spoke of coming revival, Hinn spoke up and declared that there would be a sign, and "the sign will be Billy Graham's death." Hinn went on to claim that he received this information from God in 1989.

The Lord said to me in '89...sorry, yeah, '89. He said when Oral Roberts and Billy Graham go home will be the key—it will be the sign—of the beginning of the greatest revival on earth. Oral is home. Billy is about to go home. And when he does, I am telling the whole church, get ready.

You can view this episode of Praise the Lord in its entirety here on TBN. The relevant portion begins about 1 hour, 45 minutes into the program.
