Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter

Hundreds of Orthodox Christians on Sunday flocked St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, Namungoona, in Rubaga Division to mark Easter.
The different celebration dates arise from the use of the Julian calendar by the Orthodox instead of the Gregorian calendar used by the other Christians who marked their Easter celebrations last Sunday.

The holy liturgy was presided over by the Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala and Uganda, HE Archbishop Jonah Lwanga. The service was attended by MPs Theodore Ssekikubo representing Lwemiyaga County and Silvia Akello, the Otuke Woman representative.
In his Easter message, Lwanga asked the Orthodox Christians to deepen their faith in God reminding them about the will of God and not to merely celebrate the resurrection.

The archbishop who recently prophesied about the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) government upcoming collapse because of the injustices, today stayed clear of politics in his Easter message and appealed for peace and love for one another although talking to the media later, Lwanga said Ugandans should be stay optimistic because "very soon there will be a new beginning."
Lwanga later delivered the message from the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Beatitude Theodoros II in which he appealed for love among the Orthodox Christians in Uganda. He encouraged them to continue having faith in Jesus Christ’s resurrection and also exercise patience and endurance as well as care for the poor and all those in need.

“At the same time, this faith encourages us to love and be besides those who are suffering, respect and care for those who are afflicted, expressing in the most essential manner a worship of Christ who has resurrected for our salvation. Even more so, does our comprehension of the souls of our neighbours and the care of their relief, manifest our faith in the resurrection and our practical love,” read part of Pope Theodoros Easter message to the Orthodox Christians.
