My analysis
The economic growth subterfuge that
is being used by the IMF and World Bank neo-liberal economists to portray President
Museveni as one of the best leaders in the world is a very flawed measurement
of development. It measures economic development (development of material things)
instead of human development (empowering human beings to live a life of dignity).
It focuses on quantitative change instead of qualitative change. It also
ignores human rights and social justice as fundamental ingredients of
development. It was never intended to be used as a standard for measuring human well being. It is therefore no surprise that the economic growth metric of these American
neo-liberal economics has endorsed President Museveni as one of the best
leaders in the world despite the fact that he is presiding over a very corrupt
state that is grossly violating human rights. Museveni’s Uganda is characterized
by land grabbing, police brutality, army brutality, nepotism, cronyism,
pathetic health sector, and persistent human rights abuses. The increasing
economic growth in Uganda is not trickling down to the poorest men and women in
society.
