Living with purpose is getting within the reach of more Ugandans. Rick Warren, world-renowned for his multi-million seller The Purpose Driven Life, was in Uganda - and at
UCU - recently to help the process along. "Jesus did five things that if we follow today, will be the antidote for our problems," said Warren, during a high-profile gathering on March28. "He promoted reconciliation, equipped servant leaders, assisted the poor, cared for the sick, and educated the next generation." Noting these as the solutions to the 'global goliaths' of spiritual emptiness, corruption, poverty, disease, and illiteracy, Warren addressed a crowd of highranking Ugandans from government, the clergy and business.

The national launch of Purpose Driven Living was held at the Imperial Royale Hotel, hosted by the Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, and included several representatives from UCU. Warren had visited the university earlier that same day and spoken to a student and staff gathering at Nkoyoyo Hall. Orombi, who is also UCU's Chancellor, had invited The Purpose Driven Life author, Rick Warren, as guest speaker at the evening event.

President Yoweri Museveni was represented by Hon. Dr. Ezra Suruma, the Minister of Finance. "President Paul Kagame invited Rick [Warren] to make Rwanda purpose driven," explained Orombi, before stating that Ugandans, too, should live with a purpose. This was Warren's fourth visit to Uganda in three years. He left for Rwanda the next day for the start of teaching of the40-day Purpose Driven Life programme there, at the25,000-seat Rwanda National Stadium.

Warren told his Ugandan audience that the three sectors (public, private and faith) need to join hands, as Uganda's problems are too big. "Do not ignore the church. It is the biggest and it is global. Nothing will last longer than the church," he said, noting that churches are everywhere. Warren advised government leaders to build their lives on purpose.

"Do not build your lives on pleasure, wealth, fame, power, prestige, politics and other such things," he said. Warren told of his own wealth and fame that came with writing an international bestseller. "I was invited to speak at functions all over the world. Kings, prime ministers, presidents, universities like Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard all asked me to speak," he said, warning that the spotlight is blinding, and not always good for character.

He also asked churches not to compete, but to cooperate, and challenged businessmen to use their resources as a blessing to other people and to the nation. "God will ask you two questions: What did you do with my son Jesus Christ? And what did you do with what you were given?" Warren said. He urged the government, church and businessmen to use what God has put in their hands. He advised from his experience how to effectively handle affluence and influence.

"My wife and I suddenly had a lot of money, but we did not change our lifestyle. We remained in the same house and stayed with the same car," he revealed. Warren added that he stopped taking a salary from the church he has led for 29 years, and instead repaid the salary given to him for most of that time. "We also set up a foundation for people living with HIV/ AIDS, and we give 90 per cent of our income back to the church," he added, amid applause from the guests.

Orombi thanked Warren for teaching about God's purpose, and described him as a special friend. "When I first arrived at his office, I thought I hadn't arrived. I was amazed by the simplicity of his chair and desk," he said. Finance minister Suruma said he was"deeply touched and appreciative of the words of encouragement" from Warren, adding he was given The Purpose Driven Life by his secretary, and it was a great blessing to him.

Allen Kagina, Commissioner General Uganda Revenue Authority, noted that God's purpose is not hidden or a mystery, but revealed, nor an event but a journey. "I believe my purpose is to collect enough revenue to fund the national budget, so that Uganda can
truly become independent," she stated, to the amusement of the guests.

Other guests included the Ethiopian Ambassador Terfa Mengesha. From UCU were VC Stephen Noll and his wife Peggy, DVCs John Senyonyi and wife Ruth, Alex Kagume and wife Allen, Chaplain Frederick Baalwa, Dean of School of Divinity and Theology Rev. Can. Alfred Olwa, and Rev. Daniel Button, Head of the Department of Foundation Studies and his deputy, Rev. Amos Turyahabwe.
