KAMPALA — International televangelists Benny Hinn and Kenneth Copeland
are facing a social media backlash in Uganda after postponing their
planned healing crusades over Ebola concerns, with many questioning why
preachers known for claiming miraculous healings would avoid a country
battling an outbreak.
The Global Conference on the Holy Spirit, scheduled for June 27-29 at
Miracle Centre Cathedral in Kampala and hosted by Pastor Robert
Kayanja, was expected to draw thousands of worshippers and also feature
Nigerian preacher Paul Enenche.
Organisers said the event was postponed following consultations
with health experts over the Ebola situation and risks associated with
large gatherings.
The decision, however, sparked sharp reactions online.
“The healer? Please sir come and heal us from this Ebola,” one user posted on X.
Another, Isaac Mulindwa, wrote: “They do not trust the very faith they preach.”
A third user remarked: “You mean the guys who can heal through
faith have no ability to fight the Ebola virus through faith? I’m
shocked.”
The criticism reflects a broader debate over faith healing, with some
Ugandans arguing that an Ebola outbreak would have been an opportunity
for the televangelists to demonstrate the miraculous powers they preach
about rather than a reason to stay away.
Supporters of the postponement, however, defended the move as a
prudent public health decision, noting that Uganda has previously
contained Ebola outbreaks through strict measures, including limiting
mass gatherings.
Organisers say the conference is likely to be rescheduled later
this year, but for many online critics, the cancellation has raised
uncomfortable questions about the limits of faith healing in the face of
a deadly disease.

health care, received the vials on behalf of the government and described the donation as a critical safeguard for Ugandan families.
Although Uganda currently has no active
Ebola cases, an ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo species in
neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) poses a serious and
immediate health security risk.
According to US officials, the DRC
outbreak had grown into the largest recorded outbreak of Ebola outside
West Africa, with more than 4,500 confirmed cases and over 2,000 deaths
as of mid-August 2026.
MBP134 was developed by Mapp
Biopharmaceutical under a contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research
and Development Authority (BARDA), an agency within the US Department
of Health and Human Services.
The antibody is designed to act faster
than the body’s natural immune response by recognising and neutralising
the Ebola virus rather than waiting for the body to develop its own
immunity over days or weeks.
Pre-clinical studies have shown MBP134 to
be effective against multiple Ebola species, including the Bundibugyo
species responsible for the current outbreak in the DRC.
For a disease with limited treatment options, the antibody offers an additional tool for doctors responding to suspected cases.
MBP134 is not commercially available and
is being provided for compassionate use, allowing doctors to administer
it to critically ill patients while research into its effectiveness
continues.
Regional response
The donation is part of broader US efforts
to strengthen Ebola preparedness and response in the region. The United
States has announced more than $619 million in funding to countries in
the region to support Ebola response activities, including preparedness,
surveillance and outbreak control.
Bishop Dr LaDonna C. Osborn has arrived in Uganda to preside
over Pastor Patience Rwabwogo’s August 23 consecration as an Episcopal
Bishop.
LaDonna Osborn has arrived in Uganda ahead of Patience Rwabwogo’s consecration.
The
ceremony will take place on August 23 at Covenant Nations Church in
Luzira. Rwabwogo is entering episcopal leadership after 20 years of
ministry.
Osborn has also urged Ugandan women to embrace leadership while remaining grounded in their Christian faith.
International evangelist Bishop Dr LaDonna C. Osborn has arrived
in Uganda ahead of the consecration of Pastor Patience Rwabwogo as an
Episcopal Bishop.
Osborn arrived at Entebbe International Airport ahead of a series
of Christian activities leading to the August 23, 2026, ceremony at
Covenant Nations Church in Luzira.
The consecration will coincide with the church’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
Speaking after her arrival, Osborn described Rwabwogo as a
committed Christian and visionary leader. She said the new role would
place greater responsibility on her to serve the Church and spread the
Gospel.
Osborn also encouraged Ugandan women to embrace leadership in the Church and society without abandoning their Christian values.
Her visit renews a long family connection with Uganda.
Her parents, evangelists Dr T.L. Osborn and Dr Daisy Washburn
Osborn, held major crusades in the country, including a widely
remembered Kampala campaign in 1985.
Osborn has continued that missionary relationship. She returned to Uganda in 2025 for the Light Up Uganda for Jesus convention.
Her latest visit comes as Covenant Nations Church marks 20 years under Rwabwogo, who founded and leads the ministry.
Rwabwogo is due to enter the episcopal office after two decades of ministry.
She has described the elevation as a calling rather than a personal achievement.
“This is not about personal promotion. As Scripture reminds us,
promotion comes from the Lord. I receive this calling with humility and
gratitude because it carries greater responsibility to serve God's
people,” Rwabwogo said.
She has also pledged to use the new office to expand her
evangelistic work beyond Uganda and encourage more women to remain
committed to their Christian calling.
Bishop Joshua Lwere has backed Rwabwogo’s ministry and urged women to recognise their ability to serve and lead in the Church.
Osborn will preside over the consecration through prayer, the laying on of hands and the formal act of consecration.
Before the ceremony, she is scheduled to minister on August 20,
2026, at the “Carrying the Torch” Conference at City of David in Luzira.
The conference will focus on the responsibility of Christians to
receive the Gospel, preserve it and pass it to the next generation.
Osborn and Rwabwogo previously worked together during the 2025
Light Up Uganda for Jesus convention, which brought Christians from
different denominations together for worship, prayer and evangelism.
The August 23 ceremony is expected to draw Ugandan and international Christian leaders, worshippers and invited guests.
Organisers say the occasion will mark both Rwabwogo’s entry into
episcopal leadership and Covenant Nations Church’s 20 years of ministry.
